Two part question:

A. Any advice on shops in Monterey/Salinas/Seaside. I was pleased with Autowerx in Salinas, but it closed. Can't afford tow to Van Cafe unless I have to.

B. My '89 automatic tranny sits in a stranger's driveway, so I need to move quick. Any advice appreciated:
First, one headlight wouldn't come on, then it did, then started fine. Half hour later after stopping, won't start. Lights come on fine, coolant light blinks, etc. Batteries are fine but no sound. Doesn't turn over. Doesn't click. Nothing

My first thoughts are ignition and then starter, both of which, I believe, are original.

I "fixed" a similar problem nine months ago by removing a hard-start relay contraption installed by a previous owner.

Get a AAA card for towing. *ALL* Vanagon owners should have one.

Weinerwagen, oh Weinerwagen where are you????

Tell them where to get their van fixed in your hood.

Try:

There are a couple of guys on Del Monte, right near the window to the bay and the comic book store, that are Great with electronics. In fact there are a couple of Vanagons in front of their shop right now. I'm spacing their name though as of now. German Autoworks in New Monterey is spendy and the guy in Seaside/Sand City has very high prices. VanCafe is definitely the cheapest, by far (I know I sound like an ad agency for them sometimes but they are simply the least expensive and most polite mechanics I have ever worked with). Good luck.

Depends on what level of membership you get.

We get platium or something like that.

The features are described on the web site.

Weinie is in Pebble Beach.....when Weenie is home, but weenie is
back in Titusville...

Your starter can be jumped from underside, and what you describe sure sounds like grounding issues

wished I was home to go take a peak...and if is in RED....

The place I was thinking of is called Susi Auto Repair. They are really good with electronics.

Try starting it in Neutral. The automatics have a switch in the shifter that prevents them from starting in anything but Park or Neutral. Sometimes if the switch is off just a bit it can prevent it from starting.

thanks, y'all. After sitting overnight, started like a peach. A big, white $10,000 peach with undersized wheels.

So I'm thinkng clean the grounds, whatever the hell they are, replace the ignition switch and contemplate a new starter.

So keep helping, you smart guys out there:

When it hasn't started in a while, it is slow to start and by that I mean I turn the key and nothing at all happens for two or three seconds and then it starts fine. (maybe a bit sluggishly, but fine)

Subsequent starts the same day are much quicker, like with a normal vehicle.

What does that suggest, Dr. House? Lyme disease?

Royal-

I've got a link to a great article on ground cleaning saved on my computer at home. I'll post it here when I get off work tomorrow. Lots of good info.

How about meeting for another cup sometime? We moved back to Monterey a few weeks ago.

Cheers!
