Hello everyone.

My tranny broke recently and I'm looking for solutions to get it rebuilt locally in the San Francisco area.

One place quoted me 925$ plus optionally 100$ for "freeway flyer" gearing. How is this price? and is the "freeway flyer" gearing worthwile?

Are there any places that I should check out locally? Shipping the drivetrain would probably be too troublesome for me.

Thanks for the help. And let me know if you have a big nut 1964 rear end for sale.

Have you tried the Buggy House in Hayward? 510-582-7843.

I think they go through a guy in Modesto

That price is really high...I want whatever they're smoking.

It would be worth it to ship the trans from a reputable shop over trying to find one locally. KCR, Strictly German, Rancho come to mind. If you're looking for someone to remove, rebuid, and reinstall...That could be a problem. If you can install it yourself, you can save a lot.

VWBobby, I called Rancho, and it was like 750$ Add shipping to this and you're close to 900 probably (and lots of headaches).

Who knows, mayble I'll just slam the bus if its cheaper...

Shipping coast to coast on an engine or transmission doesn't cost more than $100. From Southern CA to North it wouldn't be more than $60 via Forward Air. A stock rebuild isn't more than $449 usually.

Call Ken @ German Transaxle and tell him what you have. He can set you up. http://www.gtainc.biz/

Sorry, I should have been more specific, the price (925$) is for the transmission, axles and reduction boxes rebuilt. Shipped as a complete unit ready to bolt on...

The prices for just the transmission are like you said, and shipping would be easier, but the whole rear end is bulky and probably would need to go on a pallet.

i should mention that if the Buggy House is getting trannies from a guy in Modesto, it is probably Mark-of Mark's Transaxles.

i know he personally drives over a hundred miles to deliver trannies in Frisco, as well as other places. TOP NOTCH work. LOTS of experience. who else will build you a bad ass box for bringing cores and tearing down cores at his shop Laughing ??
sell you a nos bus nosecone for $25??
change out a broken axle for free and sell you sway a way axles while you're there for $100?? need parts? PILES and PILES of cores...
a good guy with a solid rep- an ol' skool one man operation truly skilled at what he does. let's face it, big name shops are not always the best option. He is the best kept secret of Nor Cal Vw shops with tranny needs, and ships them himself in the back of his pickup! skip the middle man and save him some gas.......

Since it's been almost 15 years since this thread was updated.

What's the word these days on Bay Area trans rebuilds? I've been tolerating popping out of 4th for a few years now, but it might be time.

I could go with a Rancho center section and rebuild the RGB's myself. But I may be willing to pay someone else to do the wrenching if there are good options out there.

Related note: I see that Samstag Sales advertises here now: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=2400911

Will this puller work on all the large nut RBG bearings?

I don't use any tool like that on BNs, only on small nuts. The HF puller kit I use is 93980.

Here's links to several BN tranny swaps/RGB rebuilds I've done.

User Fish on this site owns that one. Maybe PM him and ask about it.
