40 horse temp.

I have one of those lazer thermometers, what temperature, and where, should my 40 horse run at, and what is the hottest it should run at before its 'overheating'?

People have mentioned it in the past. You could do a search on laser thermometer in the Forums - quite a few threads come up.

If you point it at the case, I'm not sure how case temperature relates to oil temperature and overheating.

Oil temperature and overheating is not any different between a 40hp and other size engines. There are tons of threads about oil and head temps. - here is one with some oil temp. info from people who know stuff:
