the early bugs have a problem of starving for air when large engines and carbs are fitted and run at high rpm and need either standoffs or extra vents. do early ghias have the same problem? if so what is the fix. I'm thinking of fitting a twin port 1600 with doghouse cooler and fan and twin solexes to my 1960 ghia.

I am new to this whole VW thing, but as I recall, the Ghia has much better ventilation than the Bug. Running a 1600 shouldn't be a problem at all.

Find a later model decklid for improved cooling. Something from 1969 - 1974.

With your proposed combo, I doubt you'll have any cooling problems. The late model decklid allows a lot more air into the engine compartment. Another solution that works excellent is the under the car scoop. You can check it out on cal-look under the tech section.

On my '64 KG coupe, I'm using a late model decklid (70s model) with the plastic raintray removed to get more air in:

A friend of mine, Eric Yuhasz of Modesto drilled holes into his early decklid on his '58 Lowlight Ghia:

I put a 2110 in my 64 and drilled holes in the rain gaurd. Now I regret doing that. I don't think it was a problem stock.

Just do it and see if it runs hot. Your tranny is probably a 4:37 if it is stock and that causes your engine to turn faster but it is not working harder to make heat if that makes any sense.
