I am having problems with starting my 70 single cab.
What I have done-
replaced the crumbling fuse block with a good fuse block from a 71
checked all wires on diagram in my Bentley and checked locations on fuse block
What is going on-
the starter rolls and no fire when turning the key
this was a prior issue and had a VW shop work on it and they ran a small jumper wire from old fuse block to large fused red wire and it would start.
after replacing the fuse block, I took the small wire off and hooked everything as indicated on the wire diagram
Thought maybe the black wire from fuse 3 to the coil location #15 was bad and tried a new wire there, same situation
I thought the wire the shop put in was due to my old fuse block disintegrating and needing power to the coil? Maybe it was power to the ignition switch?
I will check the coil, but the truck can run if jump started.
any advice will surely be helpful, thanks, dt |

Could be a failing ignition switch, have a helper watch a test light connected between ground and #15 on the coil, if it goes out when you crank the switch is to blame. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Thanks busdaddy, I did purchase the back portion of the ignition switch as I had thought the problem was there, when I opened the base of the steering column up I saw the screw was missing from the switch body and the two parts had separated which is why I was having problems with the key starting and stopping the truck. When I saw what was going on, I put the two parts together and made a shim to hold the switch body together as the screw has been long gone. I will do the test light on 15 and I do have the switch if it is the problem. Any idea what the set screw size is for holding the switch to the keyed portion is? Thanks, dt |
