Wow! Mine was neptune blue and white on top from the factory. It came to the US in Georgia. It was built on a Monday in the 29th week of 1979. It was a 7 seater Micro bus (now an 8 seater) that came with a 2.0 liter with a 091 tranny. The only thing thats really changed on her is the middle seat upgrade and a differnt color of blue.

Sweet.

This thread got me to digging around under my dash on my '79 Westfalia, and all that was there on the fresh air vent are the 2 holes where my M Plate is supposed to be. Darn! Any idea how to back trace a VIN to determine what M plate it should have?
Bummed in Round Rock.

Bummer!! That sucks. The only thing that I can think of is to try and get a "birth" certificate from VW.

I simply CANNOT find this on my 1977 Westy. Do you have to remove the dash to see it? That sould seem silly. My 1976 had it behind the driver's seat, which was easy.

It's on the drivers side fresh air / vent tube. Gotta crawl under the dash. It's facing up, so you can't read the thing directly. You could either take a tracing (piece of paper over the plate then rub with the side of a pencil) or use a mirror.

Hi Everyone

I was wondering if anyone has info on the following M Codes:

92 xxx xx

9832ED D03 P27 005 227

10 2 7457 UT 2319 61

This comes from a 79 Westfalia 2.0 manual. We are the second owners. The original owner said that they bought it here and picked it up in Europe, traveled around and had it shipped back as part of a VW Sales program. It has the deluxe camping w/ stove & sink, jealousies not tinted.

That's about all I could gather.
Any help would be appreciated. I'm stuck on the D03 / 005 / 227

PS color is Mexico Beige w/ Brown Plaid camping interior.

Thanks, Bob

Since it seems y'all are working on m-plates in here, maybe someone can clear up my confusion. A quote from my previous attempts.

Chassis #12 045 959

E designation - Unknown

Built on a Friday of week 39 of production. This works out at a late august production date, meaning until I get the bus here to look at it, looks like an August of 1970 build date as August '71 would be a '72.

Delivered to the Port of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This used to be an East Coast bus!

It says its a standard 7 seater microbus though, not a true Deluxe. Whats up with that? Looks deluxe to me....

Codes:

A01- USA Spec
042- ???
508- Vent wings in passenger windows

8018 on the tag appears to be an unknown quantity too. Doesnt look like a hackjob though, what do you all think?

Its got a sunroof, belly pans, and trim, yet no mention of these on the plates. What gives?

here ya go:

42 118 829: 4= model year ('74) 2 is always there, the rest is you VIN
507= Vent wings in cab doors
J6J6= Neptune Blue
51= dark beige interior
D53 = ? If it was made in 1970 you would have a huge heaping helping of M codes including one for chrome, not painted parts, mud flaps and other cool stuff, for 1976 it just means USA spec. Being a '74 ...I guess you're screwed.

067= Battery 54 A
093= Vent wing in rear sidewindow opposite sliding door
227= detachable headrest in cab
09= nineth week of the year (late feb, early march, check calendar for 1974)
1= Monday
7468= unknown
UP= USA port ???
231= Kombi, cargo door right, LHD
641= not on the charts! E-mail the guys on the type II list or get the actual m code book that has recently come out.

'74 blue Kombi...very nice

The first digit in you VIN is "1". This would be the model year as well. I'm going with 1971 as year. Just my .02

Well this is what we need:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1861267657/sr=8-1...oding=UTF8

It was written by the guy who compiled the list on the type II site.
Supposedly it has all the M-codes including the ones with the ?? on the type II site.

I want one! I don't get it why I love looking up these old m-codes.... I guess it's like treasure hunting.

Here you go:

D03 = Group of M-codes.......

012 Exhaust emission control installation and speedometer in miles instead of kilometers
067 12v 54A battery instead of standard 12v 45A battery
073 Roof opening ad reinforcement for Westfalia pop top SO 73
102 Rear window heating (defrost)

568 - tinted windows except windscreen for years 74+75
568 - tinted windows and windscreen with laminated windscreen for years 76+77

not sure what to make of that one for your 79........

764 - not listed in Vincents book. Sorry!

It was a great Father's Day present for me this year! I have loved looking through it. I can't say enough good things about it. Very informative and if you like doing this stuff, it is a must!

Your birthday must be coming up soon Dave! Wink
