Can anyone help me figure all this out, or point me to where I can get the info from. I did a search & found nothing. I also checked the tech pages, but that is all for pre 67 splitts. Thanks.....................james

Dave is correct. If you look to the upper right hand corner of the pic, you can see the steering column going into the floor. I'm ripping this bus apart & took the dash out today & saw this. It's actually mounted upsidedown, depending how you look at it. Upsidedown from the drivers seat, but correct from standing in front of the bus. I wanted to get some info if possible. This bus had A/C in it, but I don't know if it was OG or not. I also believe it had camper equipment at one time aswell. _________________ Hoockd on fonicks werkt for mee?

A/C was never a factory option, but a Dealer option. If your bus had camper equipment, then that was due to a PO. It was not sent out from the factory to be a camper. How do I know?
I'm a M-code freak! I love looking up those #s!
If you want the low down on your bus, let me know, otherwise I'll let you have the joy of # hunting.
Cheers! _________________ "Beer is proof that God loves us and wishes us to be happy"- Ben

Sorry Dave, I gotta call you on this one.
Third line:
21 388 G67 119 517
The numbers say it, 517 is Campmobile, G67 unconfirmed but I have my suspicions it is the SO-67 variant of the westy conversion. True the westy outfitting was done at Westfalia-Werke, but the buses were destined for that factory from the start. IMO.
Look at the sunroof cutout, dimples where there would be screw holes, dimples where the sunroof drains were, even if they were all sunroof Kombis from the factory they would have had to strip this all out. Now the Sundials, those were panels bought by Sundial and converted in the US. |

Hmm, not trying to be an ass here but I went back up and re-read his plate in the pic and I didn't see any of the reference #'s from the 3rd line that you have. The last group of digits on the last line I read as: 2218 61, translates to microbus, 7 seater, sliding door right, LHD, 70 HP motor, with a manual transmission.
His whole plate reads as:
72 164 639
( "7" = 1977 the rest is the last of the VIN)
J4R152 DO1 227 246
(J4= Neptune blue on bottom, R1= Pastel white on top, 52= interior panels are albster(grey) leatherette, DO1= US Spec, 227= detachable headrest in cabin, 246= ? ( I hate it when I get the"?")
25 3 7155 UN 2218 61
25= 25th week of the year, 3= day of the week/ Wednesday, 7155= unknown (damnit!), UN= not listed ("U" usually refers to a U.S. Port), 221= 7/8/9 seater microbus, 861= 7 seater micro, 70 BHP engine, manual transmission.
Again, not trying to be an ass. Just not seeing those other numbers on his plate in the pic. _________________ "Beer is proof that God loves us and wishes us to be happy"- Ben

No, those are the numbers off my plate. See the 388 (Canspec)?
One of those numbers should be designated for the westy conversion. Maybe one of the unknown ones. |

It looks like the whole second line is missing. Could this be a Riviera or Adventurewagen conversion? |

# 073= pop up campmobile
#517 campmobile
#518 campmobile with pop up roof
#609 campmobile deluxe
A67 Westfalia campmobile 67 A (SO 67)
And there are several other lettered westy packages. _________________ "Beer is proof that God loves us and wishes us to be happy"- Ben

I'm certain that the Riviera and adventurewagen conversions utilized Kombi's. And that VW never M-coded them as such. This bus went out with all the seats and bells and whistles. It's not unheard of for a whole second line to be missing. My DC dosen't have a second line of M-codes either. _________________ "Beer is proof that God loves us and wishes us to be happy"- Ben

Didn't you see the 36 interior code on there? OK, it won't work twice.
Anyone know what interior code 36 is? I think it is tan"ish". _________________ ~ Sean

This is the response I got from Vincent, who made the list on the type2.com page, about our bus.
The UN code is a code for New York, which makes sense if you are in New Jersey. The bus hasn't strayed much from it's original home!
Maybe this helps! Our busses were built a week apart! That's pretty cool. I bet they came over on the same cargo ship.
Good luck!

********************************************
Hi Jeremy,
Here are the codes of the 1977 Sage Green Westfalia Camper. D10 is a group code. It stands for a collection of M-codes. I printed in my list on my webpage that is is Canada Specifications. I did it because I saw D10 once before on a 1973 Westfalia exported to Canada. In the meantime I discovered that these group codes changed each year. Let's say all these codes were 're-issued' each year. So this exact same collection of codes could be A25 in 1978 for instance. Anyway, a German friend of me has a microfiche showing all these group codes. I'll ask him if he can look D10 up for model year 1977.
The plate under the dash reads:
> 72 162 241
> 227 246
> 945134 D10 P27 005 073
> 24 3 7503 UN 2319 61
****** 1st line ******
72 162 241 = chassis number
7: model year 1977
2: this is an extra number that was used to distinguish 1970ties and 1960ties chassis numbers. The '2' would turn
into a '3' as soon as 1 million vehicles of this model been produced. This never happened with the Transporter production.
162241: the serial number.
****** 2nd line ******
227 = Mcode: Detachable headrests for all seats cabin
246 = Mcode: Windshield fee from import-duty for USA (only with M89)
****** 3rd line ******
945134 = paint- and interior code
9: special painting instructions were applied
451: colour: sage green L63H ('taigagrün')
34: door panels and seats
- material: cloth
colour: camping green yellow 'campinggrüngelb')
Westfalia buses have standard VW colours but because a Westy also needed to be painted on the
inside the special paint instruction was applied. A regular VW Kombi is grey in the cargo compartment.
D10 = Mcode: this is a group of m-codes.
P27 = Mcode: Campmobile deluxe with pop-up roof, spare tire, combined gas/electric refrigerator
005 = Mcode: Heater outlet in seat box of rear bench seat
073 = Mcode: Roof opening and reinforcement for pop up roof SO 73
****** 4th line ******
24 3 = this code is a date. This date is most likely a few days later than the actual production date.
Week 24, day 3 (=Wednesday), of production year 1977
7503 = code related to production planning
UN = destination code: USA, New York
2319 = 23: VW Kombi (delivery van with windows)
1: LHD, sliding door right
9: Campmobile (M609)
61 = 6: 2000cc Fuel injection engine (M157/M251)
1: manual 4-speed gearbox _________________ ~Jeremy (and Jessica)
