Compliance plate is behind drivers seat. There are two holes behind the passengers seat, but there has never been anything there?

HI,
i imported a 73 type 2 from Australia and i decided to try and find out some history on the van, first up i noticed that there was a small plate spot welded above the chassis number in the engine bay with 10 numbers on it i sent to wolfsburg for a birth certificate and was surprised by what info came back.

colour was L 345
built in Germany 1973 and shipped to Australia
extra options M403 & M705 (cannot be identified)

this is where the fun begins, i emailed them back saying that the van was orange and had never been re painted.
I asked them what the extra numbers were above the chassis number, they said they could not identify them,( although the first 6 numbers are actually on the birth cert under Model 234 031.

The van does not have a M code plate only an australian compliance plate behind the drivers seat, so this would suggest that it was built in Australia contradicting what the birth certificate says, i have checked all over the van and under dash on fresh air vents for an M code plate, nothing found and no holes to suggest it had been taken off.

contacted wolfsburg again and they are adamant that this van was not a CKD kit and all other info on the cert was correct, i posted on the kombi club in Oz and got some interesting info from the guys over there that backs up that the van was built on Oz.

anyone had the same experience as me getting false info from Wolfsburg on a Birth cert

would be interested to here your stories

this is all my aussie van has too, just waiting for my birth cert to see what that comes back with

I'm sure this has been asked, but I looked and could not find it -

when deciphering my production date, I have week 26 3rd day.

When counting weeks, is "week 1" the first FULL week of the year?

ie if Jan 1 is a Wednesday, does that week count as the last week of the previous year or the first week of the current year?

I thought his birthday was June 29 (he's a 77) but when I plugged the numbers into http://vw-mplate.com/mcode.php it says June 22...

Hi! I've been driving and working on VWs for over a decade and just bought my first aircooled car. I am currently researching to find the proper emissions parts to SMOG my bus in California. I ran my m-codes on http://vw-mplate.com/ yesterday and got some strange results. I emailed the administrator for some help about this also but have not heard back yet. Maybe someone here can help me sort this out.

Here is my plate and the data I got back:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Here is the tag in my door jam:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The report says my bus is a '77 Microbus, but my vin number says it is a '79 and it has the options of a '79 Westfalia. It has a GE 024841 engine. Unfortunately someone painted over the label in the engine compartment.

I've read a few threads on the Samba about the m-codes, but I cannot make any sense out of this. Can anyone help me out?

Thank you,

Nick

The M-Plate is off a 1977. The serial number does not match the door jam.

M-Plate serial 136 377
Door Tag serial 122 820

The front nose may have been replaced with a 1977.

Start checking all the other numbers.

Hi All, recently got my birth certificate with two unknown m codes. One M 618 which appears to be 70 amp alternator. The second is M 583 will anyone know what it stands for?

M583 is without the air compressor for the ‘spacesaver’ spare.

have a heater in the back?
from ratwell-Most every baywindow bus equipped with an alternator came with a 55A (770W) model from Bosch but if you had a camper or bus equipped with fresh air fans and a BA6 Eberspacher gas heater, the factory put in a 70A (980W) model. If your m-plate has code M618 or a code that expands to include M618, that means you originally had the 70A version.
You might wonder why a gas heater needs a bigger alternator (it's because of the additional power load from the blower for the BA6).
Apart from the higher 15A peak output capacity, the alternator is physically different from the 55A version:http://www.ratwell.com/technical/Alternator.html

Yes I spent a chunk of my time bringing my BA6 back to life so I know that it really needs the more powerfull alternator.

Thanks for the code! When I got my bus it was pretty complete but no space saver spare tire. Now I know there was never a pump.

How is it that these codes are out there but the factory cannot recognize them?
