Working on a friends 87 synchro, new plug wires, has airflow fixer patchcord. Looking for ideas on diagnosing this bus. Runs ok while cold once warmed up starts to run like an old steam engine, smokes black, stumbles. While driving turning off and restarting makes it go away for a very short period. looking to start with the basics, ecu? Lar |

Check your pressure regulator and for a vacume leak. Then I'd yank the injectors and see if they are not pumping in an odd manner.
See if your ignition is hitting on all wires, you may have more than one thing going wrong _________________ Geology with a Syncro rocks!

I'd check the coolant temp sensor new or not. I had one that was bad out of the box. |

A few years back, my 91 Syncro Camper developed the same symptoms
you describe.
It was corrected easily by cleaning and reattaching the ground wire
(brown one) that is included in the wire sheath that leads to the
hall sender at the base of the distributor. The brown wire I refer
to may terminate either at the top left side of the engine (under
the a/c compressor location) or on one of the bolts located on one
of the corners of the oil breather base.
If this ground wire appears to have a good clean ground, and you are
still experiencing the problem, check the wire for continuity. You
may want to check the Bentley Manual wiring diagram yourself, but I
believe this wire is #19 in the ECU harness connector.
My recently acquired 1990 Syncro Camper has this wire terminating at
the oil breather base, and I intend to reattach this wire to the
engine block, or include a second ground wire lead to it, as the oil
breather is plastic, and the wire is dependent solely on the bolt it
is attached to for the ground connection.
You may find the following very helpful, if you don't already know about it:

The explanations about keeping good, clean grounds on the Vanagon are not an exageration. This site has all kinds of other useful info for Vanagon owners.

If you are smoking black then that means too much fuel . The O2 sensor tests the exhaust and advises the AFM to provide more air or less , thereby creating a leaner mix or a richer one . It sounds as if the O2 is not functioning therefor telling the engine to provide a richer mix in the belief that the engine is still cold . This theory also applies the the temp sensor . If the ECU is convinced the engine is still cold it will provide constant richer mixes .
Easy job to check them out . _________________ I was born at a very early age and it was such a shock I didn't speak for another 2 years .
