Does anyone know if a 1970 1600 requires the o rings between the case halfs. I assemble my engine last night and did not install o rings that came in kit. Apprantly some engines require these o rings and some years do not. I am just not sure if mine requires them.

Thanks

I pulled the cases apart. and I do not see any sort of recess where these o rings may go. Does this mean I have a newer case?

The recesses are on the distributor half of the case.

I am looking at the case halfs right now, and I do not see any sort of recess. Are they not typically where the 6 case studs are ? I thought I read some where that later year cases do not these recess. ???????

Actually the recesses are on both halves.
I'll get some pics up in a few.

If that is the case, then my case halfs do not have the recesses. Is it true that later model cases do not have these recesses????

Brand new off the shelf magnesium case.

O-rings go around the 6 large studs and into the recesses at the base.

Other half of the same case.

I'm thinking you have a case that at one time took the sealing case nuts on the 6 big case studs and maybe didn't have the o-ring recess.

My case halfs do not look anything like the pics. There are no recess areas. How do I seal this. Sealing washer / nut. ???

Thanks

sorry to hijack this thread but it reminded me of this. I was trying to take the o rings out of my case, and i found them to be EXTREMELY hard. I pushed on them with a screwdriver and they didnt budge or flex or squish or anything. My screwdriver eventually slipped and scratched the case and I decided to stop before I did something stupid. I figured they would be soft rubber but maybe im missing out on something.

Well, heat does have a play in that shit. You might think about replacing those.
But getting back to the original question, that case is prior to "O" ring cases. If you try to put the "O"-rings on the main bolts, it will hold the center main open and will have really bad oil pressure.

What do you do if your case has been shuffle pinned as in the example above?

I just put a blob of Ultra Grey rtv under the washers when I bolt it
together, I never put any sealant on or around the main bearing journal
stands. Never had a leak. Wink
