Has anyone ever done this before? I aquired a good, used type 3 block and want to convert to a type 1 engine for a future project. the block-off plate for the dipstick is easy. BUT, drilling and tapping for a oil pressure sensor and drilling and fitting a dipstick tube will be a bit difficult. Is there a way to do this or just leave it as a type 3? thanx, dave.

Type 3 blocks are an easy sell-- heck, I need one!

Trade it for what you need (or better!).

Some vw shops have jigs to accomplish this. I had a similair case awhile back. The oil sender is a easy tap. The dip stick is a dip more of a tricky.

I've had such a conversion done a few years ago, by Rimco in Calif. Nice job. Another detail is, if the T3 block you have is out of a fuel-injected model, and you plan on using a stock Beetle fuel pump, then you will need to install slightly longer studs for the fuel pump. The stock T3 ones are about 1/2" too short. If you will use an electric fuel pump that is mounted up front near the tank, then you can use those stock studs on the engine and just make up a cover out of sturdy sheetmetal.

so these jobs are possible. thats great. this case is a orig 72 block from a fasty, is an as41, but could not find the serial #'s on it. looks to be unmolested as well (line bore and thrust cuts). i do know it was rebuilt at one time on account of a mexican rear main seal behind the auto flexplate. dont think wolfsburg imported them from mexico.
