Heat the gear up on a hot plate.
It'll go right on then.
Dots out!

Sometimes the spacer has to be warmed up too.

You have to heat the cam gear. I use a torch. It's made to be a press fit.

Don't machine anything.

This technique comes from the Tom Wilson book "How to Rebuild Your Volkswagen Air-Cooled Engine."

Put the gear and spacer in a small pan filled with some vegatable oil. You only need enough to cover the gear. Now heat the oil until it starts to show wispy smoke coming off the surface. The gear will now be hot enough and expanded enough to slip easily on the crank. You only get one shot at this - you need to work quickly because the gear cools quickly once it comes in contact with the cold crankshaft. Once you extract the gear from the hot oil you can handle it with a thick leather work glove.

I've used this technique several times and the gear will just drop into place if you work quickly. Good Luck!
