I purchased a stock style (made in Denmark) exhaust setup for my Thing from someone selling here on The Samba.

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=235521

Arrived safe and looks real nice. Much better than what I had. It came with all the pieces for both side including the gaskets but no of the bolts, nuts, or tailpipe clamps.

So, not sure if the old non stock exhaust I remove has the nuts and bolts needed but probably not or they are real rusty.

Does anyone here know what size and style of nuts, bolts, washers, and tailpipe clamps I would need and where can I get them. Certain grade of bolts? Not sure about the clamps also as I am a first timer on this.

Thanks for any advise. I figure I will need to get generic items but wanted to make sure I get the right generics.

Most suppliers should have the clamps. They are the same clamps used on the Beetle's tailpipes.

Looking at my Thing Parts Manual, section 19, item # 15, called a

111 251 267 Clip, Exhaust Pipe

Looks to connected the muffler to the tailpipe. Hard to tell from the image it has but it does not look like a typical C style clamp but something special. Looks like one bolt and nut along with this clip holds the muffler and tailpipe together.

Is this a special part to the Thing only. Just looks unique from the image in the manual. Not ever seeing one before I can't tell.

Maybe someone here has this same style muffler and can confirm.

I don't have a parts manual, so I cannot look at your item. However a Thing only part would have a "181" part number. Here is a link to tailpipe clamps that will work. They may not be correct for a concourse restoration.

All of the hardware that connects air cooled exhaust parts to the heads are common to all T-1 models and many others. Saying that when ever I redo an exhaust system I eliminate all of the exhaust clamps and replace them with welded flanges, gaskets and bolts. I NEVER reuse any exhaust hardware. There are a number of hardware materials that are best for exhaust systems. Copper nuts, stainless steel bolts. This hardware is available from folks like CB performance. I have a big box of exhaust hardware and none of it is stock VW stuff. Any muffler shop can add flanges that will allow the elimination of the exhaust clamp. But also remember that I do not use stock VW exhaust systems They do not offer the performance that I seek.
