It was hard to do and I swore to myself I would never do it. But I thought it was time and I put stickers on the vanagon. Now I get vanagon waves and honks with the dive honk. The other day a guy stopped to talk vanagon and diving with me in a QFC parking lot. it was hard to put the sticker on but I am glad I did it and thank god for goo gone incase I change my mind later.

Is that a late 70's---early 80's Peugeot bike?
Ive got stickers as well, most are places i've been. Although my bus came from Pentagon Cars in Kaiserslautern-Einsiedlerhof Germany, I put a sticker on the window that says "Weider ein VW von Richard Braunsweig" It was a VW dealer I visited in Berlin in 1986. |

Nice bike, but lose the "cheater" brake levers. They were a poorly executed bad idea. _________________ Present:

We dont have a velodrome in ETN, so not too many trackbikes. I have a rigid SS mtn bike, a cyclocross bike, '88 Peugeot 12 speed/converted SS road bike and recently a 1972 Hercules 3 speed. Fixees are making a showing around here as riders try to get away from the "normal"
Oh yeah, this is a bus forum...I like bikes too |

I build mine for the street.. I have a 77 Moto Becane GranRecord that I converted to single speed with freewheel and brakes, and a 57 Atala track bike (pictures attached) The Atala is now all Campy equiped, and the MB is riding on PhilWood hubs and 700x35 tires so I can actually jump curbs if I need... I have a Kona Hoss Delux in case the roads get worse..I was living in the SF area and rode them a lot, but here in the boonies there are too many hills...

I guess I should have taken pictures with them on a rack on the van just to stay on topic..... I probably could have gotten the Atlas Snowshoe sticker on my van inn the shot too.... _________________ '69 bug--rusty as hell

I've got a nice Guibilato frame that I'm considering making into a fixie, but then I'd be riding the recumbent less, and my full-Campy rando bike is languishing in the corner... Too many bikes, too little riding time.
We have a pretty nice covered velodrome here in the Vancouver area. I've been tempted to go and check out track riding on one of their introduction evenings. Sounds like a lot of fun.
VW content: I really like the fact that I can transport a bike inside the Westy, rather than having to hang it off the back or on top of the vehicle. _________________ Present:

My commuter is a full fendered old school Benotto track bike with a philwood hubset and a mix of campy and shimano on it and a front brake. Riding fixed has turned out to be a great way to commute since I get the added work out and the drivetrain parts take forever to wear out when you're not shifting gears or squeezing brakes.
Sperately, one of the (lesser) reason's I bought my westy is because it already had cool stickers on it. |

Out of curiousity, what gearing are you fellahs using on your fixies?
For a sense of what is actually possible on a fixed-gear, check out Kent Peterson's website: http://www.mile43.com/peterson/rando.html Warning: Kent has been known to try some pretty extreme things on a bike.
I scraped off the only sticker that came with my van when I bought it. I'm now thinking that I need to find a place for the Speedplay decal that came with my pedals... _________________ Present:

My general rule for stickers is... Only if Do not actually own the product, and if it is a car company, only if they don't make parts for my car...
i.e the big ol Neuspeed sticker I had in the window of my cutlass...( later hacked it up to say Nospeed....) _________________ '69 bug--rusty as hell

Since I haven’t found the stickers I want I’ve been making my own (so far without the stick) but I haven’t decided how to attach them yet. Since I’m printing them on my ink jet printer here at home I don’t think they are waterproof. I may just print them on label paper and mount them on a piece of Plexiglas then attach that with Velcro inside the back window behind the cabinet. Mounted over there they will not block my view any more than the cabinet already does. The van came with several stickers already attached. The firefighters union sticker will stay, but the rest I’d like to get rid of/replace. The one that will be most problematic is the one for a radio station that was mounted rather badly on the inside of the back window. Does anyone have any suggestions for a safe way to remove that without damaging the defogger? _________________ HerrBGone

I know we like fire extinguishers in our VW's, but isn't one for the bike a little extreme? _________________ 1967 Zenith Blue Type 1 "Elaine"

Had 2 Schwinn Paramount racebikes, one a fixed gear, since the late 60's until about a year ago. Unfortunately, some low-life, shit-festering, piss-eating thief broke into my storage and .... |

I am all for a well placed sticker. I mean after all someone spent a lot of time fine tuning the lines on our bread boxes. I wouldn't want to interrupt that. I can't stand explosive stickering that makes no sense, but then to each their own. I also am in full support of the beautiful relationship bikes have with the vanagon. The only place I waste more time than looking at vanagon porn is bike porn. I am currently building up a crosscheck untill I can have a custom "capital bicycles" bike built for me. I only wish I had the moola for all the paul, king, and wood parts I really want. I am also in full support of the single speed. Great for commuting. Especially when the roads get nasty with snow. The road oop of winter will really eat up your drivetrain. |

Oh I agree wholeheartedly. I’m just looking to add a couple of vehicle appropriate fraises of my own and maybe swipe one from the “Back windows… Let’s see them!!!” thread over in the Split Bus area: “<= Faster Traffic Keep Left.” I about fell off my chair laughing when I read that! But I figure I should go ask if it’s OK with the guy who thought it up if I copy his idea. What I’d really like to find is a Westy sized RV Map of North America. Lower 48, Canada and Alaska, with colored stickers of each state/province. (I can’t see myself driving my Westy into Mexico.) I’ll probably have to make that too. The only ones I’ve seen at the RV shops in my area are sized to fit a Class A motorhome. My few stickers will be mounted on a removable plexi panel inside the back window.
All this talk of bikes has me longing for spring. Now that I have Thunder I’ll be able to get my ReBike 707 to the railtrail. I haven’t got a rack for either Beetle. I can hardly wait! _________________ HerrBGone

Stickers on a Westy? Of course! Especially one used for travelling to BMX races! My rear corners are covered with bicycle stickers (only products that my boy and I use). My bike is a Nirve Clutch 24" with an Answer carbon fibre fork, Weineman wheels with sealed hubs, billet Odyssey crank and FMF bars. We transport them with a Thule rack, adjusted to sit on the tailgate, NOT the glass.

The Vanagon is the one with minimal signage!
Winston was covered with stickers, the previous owner was a very serious rock climber. The trouble is, I'm not, so I de-stickered him, which was something of an undertaking. I left one VW sticker on the clothes closet door.
I prefer quiet, subtle stickers, that gently acquire other driver's respect, such as:
KEEP HONKING, I'M RELOADING
BARRETT FIFTY: UNCLE SAM SAYS YOU BE DEAD NOW
MY OTHER SLOW MOVING VEHICLE IS AN A-10
VEHICLE MAY FUNCTION AS FUEL AIR BOMB
Gentle, enviro-sensitive stuff like that.
Actually, my other car is a '70 Dodge Dart Swinger. I'm going to great lengths to show that the new adoptee hasn't made her the less loved. |
