the original units from about '76 to about '83 had fine threads and a smaller OD shaft. the fine threads had problems with galling. the replacement units come with coarse threads and a larger shaft. real early units had a coarse thread. you can enlarge the hole in the cup washer to fit the later ones. the fans and related pulleys have large and small tapered hubs. the large hole fans are early ones up to about '75. they have a larger width taper in the center and the outer pulley needs to match. the factory pulley holding tool has two pins that plug into those holes. the later small hole fans have a smaller taper, shorter belt and the outer pulley needs to match the taper. the pulley has two holes on it's outside and the holding tool is a spanner with a tooth that hooks into either hole. early belt size is 10x725, later belt is 10x710. changing the crank pulley diameter and/or fan pulley diameter will speed up or slow down the fan speed. something other than the stock belt size will then be required. the real early alts are short, 50 amps, and hard to find. next size up was 55 amps, and a bit taller, next 75 amps and same size as the 55, then the 90 amp and taller yet. each size alt requires the proper fan housing with the proper depth to fit the height of the alt. a machine shop can cut them deeper if you update, but you need to know the difference in height. _________________ John Walker's Workshop 206 789 6800
