Picked up a cool Cox dune buggy this weekend. Anyone know what tires fit like the originals? The buggy has 2 flats in the rear, otherwise all intact. Maybe hobby shop or anyone have some originals they want to sell me? thanks. _________________ 1963 Ragtop Bug

Search HOBBY MARKET.... Off road - RC CARS- if you know dimensions in hub that may be a off the shelf option that will be close enough to match original...
For example...
http://www.amainhobbies.com/index.php?manufacturer...agodbmWnFQ
had the Beetle version years ago and actually put a radio control unit into it so it was steerable... Also seem to remember something like using a syringe to inflate tires, something like needle and valve in sports balls (basket ball- volley balls - etc)

Cool, thanks guys. Do you remember how the rear wheels come off? I put a small 1/4in. socketdriver on there, and the nuts won't budge, thanks. _________________ 1963 Ragtop Bug

Hey Empi,
There is a very small 'C' clip on the end of the axle shaft that holds the wheels on. One on each end of the axle. Take a look at the front tires, it's the same as the back.
I use a very small blade screwdriver (jewelers) and dig around back there until you find it. It is hard to find usually because of all of the old dirt and gunk left over from running it, but it should be in there. Later after you get the clip off, you may find that you'll have to pound out the axle from the wheels. I used a center punch and took my time.
I'm restoring one as well. I found an original cox dune buggy that is radio control from the factory. Mine used a separate plastic fuel tank that is cracked so I'm hung up trying to locate a replacement.
They're cool little projects. Good luck with your.
Regards,

Oh that makes sense about the clips on the inside of the rear wheels, thanks Tom. I'll have to take a look when I get home. Yea mine is pretty much all intact (not RC like yours though ) but when I lift the body part and look underneath I don't see a fuel cell at all? Do you have a pic of what its supposed to look like and where it is supposed to sit in there? I need to clean or soak the engine in Seafoam or something like that to get all the gunked up fuel off the motor, thanks _________________ 1963 Ragtop Bug

A small 1 or 2 oz "CLUNK" style fuel tank for model airplanes or gas powered RC cars may do the job..... We used to drill hole through original .049 tank (one on back plate of motor) to get access to fuel line nipple in back plate to extend line to "extended range" tank we put in them....
Not sure what style mount you motor may have , but if you can get to suction inlet to needle valve almost any tank will work....

Hi Dale,
Heh, that's funny - I used to do the same thing! Modify the alum. tank so I could use a larger external one - great minds must think alike!!
That is what is different about this RC dune buggy version. It does not have the tank built into the engine. It has one of Cox's 'firewall' mount type engines in it and it already uses an external fuel tank. I just need to find something to use in place of the original tank as the original tank was plastic and the tiny little 'nipple' the fuel line connected to broke off with the fuel line.
The RC receiver and servo are made as a single unit and mount to the 'pan'. It takes up most of the 'pan' so space for a different type of fuel tank is a bit limited - that's why I'm having a hard time finding a working alternative.
Sorry Empi, I did not mean to hijack your thread...
If you can post of pic of your engine I can tell you where your fuel tank is. It is usually at the back end of the engine - alum. tank with a brass back plate.
Regards,

Hey Empi,
Good picture. See the little round alum. part behind the crankcase? That is your gas tank. You will have two small holes, one on each side of the needle valve in the brass backplate, those are your fuel fill and vent holes.
That tank will give you about 2 to 3 minutes of run time, that is why Dale and I both said we had modded our tanks to allow for the use of an external tank - for longer run times.
Have fun!
