I've tried some larger screwdrivers, but I can't budge the oil pressure spring plug on my 25hp engine. Is there a recommended tool I can use to fit into the slotted plug to remove it? I'm thinking a drag link socket like this, but not sure if anyone has any better ideas or experience:

The drag link socket will be better than a screwdriver, but for really stuck ones I use a great big cold chisel that I custom ground the tip for an exact fit in the plug's slot, you can turn it with a crescent wrench or vise grips, and pound on it at the same time. I sized it so it was a slight interference fit in the slot.
Any cheapo one will do, mine came from the bargain bin at a discount tool store, it waas too soft to use as a chisel, but perfect for relief plugs. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

You might try whacking at an angle the outer parts of the slot with a hammer and screwdriver, alternating sides. When I got mine out I replace it with an allen head plug. And the suggestion of making a tool from a chisel sounds good, as the shank is square so you can grab it with a vise grip. _________________ 1971 Super Beetle & 1971 Karmann Ghia

Custom grinding a cold chisel is a creative solution for sure - I'll look into that. I can't try and approach hitting the slot from the side as I can't get an angle, so I'll look at either the socket or modified cold chisel unless someone else has a different idea. Thanks! |

Try a long head stud with thread M 10 or a bit bigger. Schrew in and pull. |

If the plug is to be reused and not marred, I use a small piece of rectangular steel, thickness = plug slot width, and length = point-to-point fit in an appropriate sized socket. _________________ "Criticism comes easier than Craftsmanship"

Cool idea. I ordered the drag link socket from Amazon and I’ll see if that works. If it doesn’t, then I’ll make a custom tool similar to the ideas you have all shared. Thanks for all the feedback |

I just use a blade socket if needed to turn it loose and pull it out with a strong magnet! It works 99% of the time. _________________ '63 OG 117 Herbie Replica
