1976 Vanagon Tintop Camper
Got caught in some very nasty rain and had to continue driving through some pretty deep water. Both turn signals and emergencies stopped working, but in two days the right signal/emergency worked, not left. Thought it was drying out. A light rain one week later and all signals out. Pulled out Flasher and water spilled onto my shorts! (must have hit a splash up). Changed flasher, and now right signal and emergency work again- but the left signal light does not even turn on. Rapid flashing on the dash for the left turn. Checked the rear left bulb and it is fine.
Any ideas? Thank you in advance!

Similar problems here on a 82. I would check the fuses- might be blown-at least they were on mine. The culprit is after the turn signal fills with water corrosion starts and travels up the wires, look to see if there is black discoloration up the wire. I had to cut mine back about 12 inches before I found good wire again. I made a solder connection and sealed with adhesive marine heat shrink and a new female faston terminal on 2 of the 3 wires. I then sealed up the boot with silicon and a wire tie. No problems lately but I haven driven through any monsoons either.

Rapid flashing usually indicates a bulb is not operating -- the reduced load (one bulb) is not enough to operate the flasher at its correct speed.

Have you checked the left front bulb? That is the one I generally find suffers the most in foul weather (not much of a seal around the lens).

Clean & test the bulb, clean the contacts -- if still no joy get an multimeter on the leads.

the black and amber plugs on the front side of your fuse panel [dash] should be removed and cleaned, or at least inspected and greased. this shows it:

Changed all bulbs, front and rear.

due to corrosion, I cleaned out the left rear socket with a qtip and a little alcohol. It was corroded with green powder. The left lights still out, and the dash indicator flashes quickly for that side (normal for right).

So, thinking about getting a whole new assembly for back left lights. The seal (if it still exists) and plastic are very fragile anyway, and god knows, I could get caught in deep water again any minute in the city...

Just for grins pop off the L/H front turn signal lens & look at the connectors on the bulb holder.

Might be some green stuff ( not moss) growing on the wiring connectors, or contacts.

Gotta keep dat Van away from dem Bayou's--
