|
|
I have a 1971 VW bay bus. I recently bought a stock muffler and new heat exchangers. The passenger side heat exchanger is not mating up to the muffler and is off by about an inch and a half. Has anyone else had this problem and would be willing to share some wisdom. |

Welcome,
Please elaborate on just how the connection is "off", short?, offset? to the side? High/low?.
"New" often means crappy made in China parts so there's a possibility the quality control guy was having a nap or off at a party sponsored "loyalty seminar", where did you get the heat exchangers?, have you tried assembling with all the nuts loose and then tightening everything a little at a time? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

If the muffler is a regular bus muffler it is probably the heat exchanger. Do you have possibly both one side and not one left and one right? I would put an old muffler up against it or the old heat exchanger to compare what part is off. If it is a header style muffler sometimes those can get bent in bulk shipping as they are just steel tubes. _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin |

Where did you get the muffler?, if it's for a 40 horse bus it won't fit a 1600. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I second BusDaddy - try loosening everything attaching the exhaust/exchangers, then just stabbing ALL the bolts in, then go around and systematically tighten it all. That make sense? _________________ - Travis

here is a 1978 exchanger cut open from the photo gallery. The center tube is exhaust and the shell hot air. If you hear exhaust inside the shell it means that it has either burned thru or cracked.
