Hey everyone,

I'm new to the Dune Buggy scene, but I've been building VW's for a few years now. I've started browsing the web for pictures and inspiration and came across this picture:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The image is actually on the Samba website in the dictionary section under "Dune Buggy." Anyway i really love the look of the Dune Buggy in the front but unfortunately have not been able to find any more pictures or info on it. I'm wondering if anyone has anymore information/pictures on this Buggy? Is it in fact a Meyers Manx? I also like the look of the tire size on the buggy, anyone care to guess the size?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Newmanx....Welcome to the site, alot of great guys here and info. I'm fairly new here too, I bought a Manx recently, I'm presently tearing it apart to do a complete restore on it, I want to drive it this summer. I don't know if that is a Manx in that pic, kinda looks like the one I just picked up, mine has that same fiberglass top too. I'm sure somebody will come along and be able to tell us more about that picture. Here's my project:

The registration plates and RHD steering give it away that its a UK picture. Its a British Manx clone with a shortened windshield. The wheels look like reversed stock VW rims with oversize tires.

hey thanks for the help guys! And congrats on the new project coop! I'm hoping to start my project soon. I now have to decide if I should go IRS or swing axle (probably IRS). I did have a nice 67 for the project but had to get rid of it yesterday due to space issues Sad but I'm now sure I want a Manx clone (or a real Manx if I get lucky). And I was wondering about the wheels on the Manx in the picture! I assumed they were smoothies, but they look reversed huh? And I like the look of the shortened winshield and didnt even realize it was shortened so thanks for the help on that!

I'm British and don't recognise the pic. My guess is that it's South African and it's a Lolette Buggy.

If I a not mistaken that was a pic I posted a while ago, from the site http://www.beachbuggyclub.co.za/ It is indeed South Africa, most probably on the West Coast of the Cape Province, and probably taken some 20 - 30 years ago. I do not think the one in front is a Lolette, but the second one from front might indeed be. If anyone needs more info on the Lolette, contact me, I'll help with pleasure!

There were numerous different types of buggies available in SA in the 60s, 70s and early 80s - this one below I have not been able to identify:

Hey thanks for the info adriaan! What i'm really curious about now is the wheel/tire size. It does look like either reversed wide five stock wheels or widened ones, anyone have a better (or more specific) guess? Also would anyone be willing to venture a guess at the tire size? Thanks for all the help guys!

You can call Bruce or winney @ (760) 749-6321 They are in Valley Center Calif. Look up www.manxdunebuggyclub.com They can authenticate your buggy.

I doubt they will be able to authenticate a South African Lolette?

The wheels in front look too big. The tires are probably some kind of bias ply type that aren't made anymore. Bruce Meyers originally recommended 14s up front for looks and handling. The tires in back look too small. They look like they're 15", but the overall diameter looks the same as the ones on the front. They don't fill the rear wheel well very well. Are you building a street buggy or one for on and off road?

stock VW wheels that people grind the hubcap clips off of and mount them backwards. It gives the car a wider stance.

Does that work good? I thought that the holes were
tapered for the lug nuts to fit into. If you turned them
around they wouldn't be tapered anymore. Is it still O.K.?

Thanks for the help BL3Manx! And it will be a street buggy, so i'm not too worried about having large tires. I actually like the stance of the buggy and the way it sits, which is why i'm curious about the wheel/tire combo. It looks like the tire size is the same all the way around, and it also looks to me like the wheels are 14's or 15's as well.

I think they are 15 inch wheels. My manx had 14's on the front when I got it, and they looked smaller than that. If I had to guess, I'd say the tires are between 26"-28" tall.

The chopped windshield is what really makes that buggy look so good though. I think the black wheels and black windshield frame have something to do with the look as well. Makes me want to remove my super chopped windshield and mildly chop my original.

I had that photo as my desktop backround for atleast a year. I wonder what year it was taken. I know its europe, but it kinda looks like hawaii.

Oh, and dont forget the kick ass buggy whip!! Very Happy

I'm sure Adriaan Pienaar is correct that it was taken in South Africa.

I think the rear suspension has been adjusted to have slight negative camber. De-cambering will make the body sit lower over the rear wheels. A small amount can improve cornering, but an excessive amount will cause rapid uneven tire wear.

Exactly my thoughts as well! I love the look of the black windshield and the black wheels. And yes even though it will be a street buggy the buggy whip is just too cool to pass up Wink
