Has anyone made their lower bed wider? Removed cabinets etc. Do you have any pics or any tips? If I can make the bed wider my wife will sleep better and I will be happier as a result of her better sleep!! |

Welcome! We sleep up and down, with me in the upper bunk and her in the lower. Cheaper and easier than performing the interior mod you suggest. You'd have to remove the rear closet and the lower cabinets, widen the rear seat base and make new seat cushions and mattress, or find the interior pieces from a different type van, as suggested. _________________ '87 Westy in Wolfram Grey Metallic, tragically crushed by a falling hickory tree in my own driveway and now gone, leaving me Vanagonless and with no plans to replace it, alas. |

With the cabinets gone, that's a queen size bed back there.
Though I doubt I'd delete a full westy interior, both my Westys have been standard weekenders: a fixed jumpseat behind the driver, the table, a full width Z-seat and in the rear, a westy side cab and the headbanger AC/storage unit. After getting tired of the cramped rear sleeping space due to the rear drivers-side cabinet and having the headbanger live up to its name too many times, I removed the side cab and the headbanger and put in a full-width rear cushion.
I love it. I can actually see out the rear view mirror now, all the little squeaks and rattles from the side and overhead cabinets are gone, and there's soooo much more space. And I don't bang my head anymore. When I picked up the replacement 2WD, the first thing I did was pull the rear cab & non-AC headbanger unit and left them with the seller before the van ever left his storage yard. Good riddance, the sprawling space is far more valuable to me than the clunky rear storage.
It does leave the rear area unfinished. I have an extra Westy sidewall/ceiling interface on my shelf that someday I'll install to complete that area.

3" firm foam mattress with 2" memory foam topper--not shown. The mattress is divided transversely with a single piece of fabric acting as the hinge and preventing a "crack" to fall into. Folds to 6" as shown in the first photo. Very comfortable and easy to set up.
Don't recommend the stock Weekender folding bed as the cushions are too lumpy and firm, even with a topper. But if you can find one, then use the hardware and plywood with foam to make your own. Many have done this and if you Google "Custom rear seat bed for Vanagon" you will get Samba sites showing what others have done.
