I've done the search, no answers.
I recently replaced the speedo/cluster from my 81 with a unit from an 87.
I used the short cable from the erg box to the speedo, clip on, from the 87.
The speedo works well, shows alittle slow. The problem is the odometer. It clocks exactly 1/2 of what it should, ie traveling 2 miles it will only clock 1 mile. This is true for the trip meter as well as the odometer.
I have taken the odometer apart several times, nothing obivious, no broken, stripped or out of alignment gears. I have JB welded the usual suspect gears to the shafts, they are soild.
Did the 81 have a different tooth/gear/cable combination?
Would a single long cable from an 87 make this work?
Any one else make this swap? Problems?

If it says 1600 under the MPH, then you have a Syncro speedo, different gearing.
