Mother nature tried her best to screw me over again but I had a garage this time
Out with the old
In with the new
After an hour and a half test drive back to NYC from Jersey I was more than pleased. This was well worth the time and money.
No more crackly back fires at down shif, no more exhaust fumes in the van, and best of all I've got BLAZING HOT heat.
The rest of the story and more photos are on my web page. Come check um out.

Gorgeous, dear fellow, just gorgeous. Sit back, open the beer, and savor it and victory.
I'm a fiend about keeping Winston neat--one of the worst things about any major job is the necessary clutter. I kind of just... shudder til I can get him back in order again. New flourescent supposed to come Tuesday, I did the wiring last week. That... is about it! Except for repairs and replacements.
Best! |

Just some more "Vanagon porn" not everyone loves the site of an ass up Van showing her "tail pipe" freshly adorned with POR15. This really is a sickness.
Loveda dubs- I am cracking open a cold Corona right now for your dedication to exhaust satisfaction. She looks very nice. Those look like some pretty smoove MB rims and high performance tires under there too. Got caught lookin'.

lovedavdubs ,
How much faster does your van run with those rims? What is your mpg these days with those steam rollers? _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

So I guess the $64.95 question has to be how long will the P15 coating last . . . And actually you're the perfect test-chimp for the project since you're in NY @ wintertime. It'll be interesting to revisit the project in a year and then again in two years. And don't fudge the results, we'll be here in California when you arrive to have a crawl under for a look-see Looks great LV! . . . and a garage to use, what's next? a lift and powered grease gun? There goes the neighborhood . . |

wow, that NY livin' is a different animal, looks like you changed your rims out at Central park.
They do look nice and I am sure the high speed stability and cornering has drasticly improved. If we all keep this up we might just give these "hippie vans" a good name. I dig the baby blue too, what is the actual color name? Mine is Vesuve Metalic Grey= Silver. _________________ 1987 Wolfsburg T25 still riding out. A bunch of other VW's passed on... |

LMFAO at the van porn! Every time I'm on the classifieds and my g/f walks into the room I get accused of looking at van porn. Maybe that's why mine won't run right now... Too much of the old van porn
As per the exhaust It's a beaut lovedavdubs. Mine is in desperate need of attention. Particularly after I put on an MSD coil and it was really burning my points out quick. Backfired so bad it blew the whole muffler in two at the seam. My mechanic put some orange silicone on there. Looks like crap. Gonna get a new one soon. Thankfully I haven't got a catylitic converter on mine. Little too expensive for my blood and not required on the 81 here in BC. |

VW calls it Medium Blue. Looks like baby blue to me. My gas mileage seams about the same as before the wheel swap. Then again I'm not one to really study the fuel gauge. The new ones are about 2" taller in dia. The difference is in the performance. I find that I've become a more relaxed driver on the highway. No need to hold the steering wheel at 10 & 2 on windy days. She no longer takes corners like a model "T" either. Yup I put them on at the park around the corner from my apartment.
Yea we'll see if the pipes hold up. Don't worry I wont cheat
By the time I finally put them on they got about 5 coats of paint. Bring it on Mother Nature
I still gotta get these damn valve covers dealt with. The bolts are missing the O ring gaskets that hold the oil inside. Anybody know where I can get these O rings

Depending on who's covers those are, I've found you can install a spacer on each mounting stud followed by a VW Golf fuel injector seal, with that spacer sized so that when the cover goes on, the inside surface of the cover is against the FI seal just as the cover's outside edge is against it's gasket. As a final touch, another FI seal, a flat washer, then the final nylock nut go on and you will have totally dry 'Empi' style covers . . . . or you can just install OEM originals with matching bails and not have any more problems. On yours, I see there are bolts used instead of a studs and nuts. You'll have to get studs and nuts to replace those bolts in order to do the deed. I found the FI seal thing works very well on hi-lift T1 motors that can only run the taller aftermarket covers. Mine have all been totally dry over the years, but I also buy decent covers to start with, and even those sometimes take a bit of machining inside to make them perfect for receiving seals, and sometimes need longer studs to be able to use the second FI seal outside the cover with a nice thick flat washer. In any case you'll find the FI seals grip the rocker studs snugly, and are fat enough and flexible enough to make a good seal without much torque. . . and of course available wherever VW parts are sold. I make my own spacers from aluminum rod - takes about 10 minutes on a lathe. A less eligant but perfectly functional alternative would be a stack of flat washers. |

If you really want to get fancy you can get coppoer crush washers or washers with a O ring in the middle. They even make washers with sealant on them just for this sort of applicationl. Don't wait too long or you will be getting oil fumes in the van again as it oozes out. _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

Thanks for the tips guys Anybody know how hot these covers actually get? I don't want to put something on and have it melt off in 10 minutes. "washers with sealant on them just for this sort of application" where can I find this r39o?
As far as the stock covers, I've had my eye out for a set for a while now. I can't seem to find the covers and bails in one place The junk yard wanted 35.00 for a used set of covers w/ bails. Seems a bit steep to me. _________________ 82 Air-cooled Westy (Lola)...My other vehicle is a subway. |

Every thing good is at the FLAPS! Or hot rod hair drier shop (VW aircooled)
Next time I see a pair of covers or bails, I will get them and send them. No big deal....
In the next days I am going hunting for the elusive BIG brakes, so I will be doing a bit of bone yarding. I have to wait a day more so the mud is not so bad but, before it rains again.... _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

Did you ever call Norm at Mesa West in Costa Mesa, California? I thought I saw a stack of them over there when I was digging for some other nuggets. His number is (949) 645-2474. And if you tell him you know Phil at Minney's Yacht Surplus or Ray Stephens Racing AND that you expect the future California resident discount . . . he'll charge you double!! |

Good god no . . . I mean I like Owen and all, but he couldn't afford me . The store is Ernie's - we've been friends many years, and have done a bit of business together and of course sailing. He still plays a mean ukulele and sings my favorite Tahitian songs
Hey LV -
The reason I suggested the FI seals is because they are re-usable and have far more compliance than things like copper seal-washers. Those are excellent for some stuff, but they require more precision mating surfaces than the aftermarket covers offer, and more torque to 'crush' for a seal than the castings can stand without problems. When you look closely at those covers in hand, and do a bit of measuring, you may find the thickness of the castings are different from hole to hole on the same cover, or worse from one side of the same hole to the other side!
FI seals live on or at the heads. They survive plenty of heat and stay flexible for years. And copper washers are excellent for hot applications. They just can't be re-used, and unless used in an application allowing enough torque to crush them down, they will leak. I've dealt with this subject a million times on big T1 street and drag motors since the 70's and know what works. I have a pair of tall aftermarket covers on my dry-sumped 81 Vanagon stroker motor in the Manx buggy. I did the FI seal treatment on those covers when I built the motor in 1987. The covers have been off a few times, but are still perfectly dry today using the original seals. That car is driven both on the street and at the dunes in blazing hot temperatures. I think there’s about 22,000 hard miles on that motor – still runs real nice too.
I'm a leak Nazi – I’ll go to comical lengths to solve any and all leaks in anything. . . it must have something to do with a serene life punctuated by a few sheer terrors at sea |
