Ok so before you ream me I have looked but could not find any details on this.

Do you need to prep the tank before taking it to be dipped? I know I should take the cap and sending unit off, but is there other stuff that needs to be done?

I read that I should tell them not to put a hole in the tank. any other good tips???

thank you

charlie

The tip about telling them not to cut a hole in the tank was mine. Both radiator repair shops here in Chico do it. The one who did my buses fuel tank cut a small hole in a bottom corner (it couldn't have been the top) so he could dry it out faster. He soldered a penny over the hole.
The man at the other place said that he cuts a hole in a tank so he can get it to go down into the hot tank faster. Is that dumb or what?
When you get the fuel tank home, you can spend some extra time shooting compressed air into the tank to get it dryer. A hair dryer can, also, help.
For my last two fuel tanks, I bought a gallon of muriatic acid in the pool dept. at Home Depot for about $6.50, read the directions and carefully mixed water with some of the acid, and sloshed it in the tank. Then I rinsed it well with water, before drying it out. Before that, I had put some bolts and water in the tank and sloshed it around to loosen any rust.

I used POR-15 Marine clean and rocks on a friend's Westy tank. I plugged the holes and then fitted my shop vac hose to the tank opening (it was a perfect match), and ran the shop vac on blower mode. Dried that thing out very quickly. Those guys cutting holes sound like hack artists to me.
