It depends on how much work you want to do, what bus you're putting it into, why you want to do it, and how much money you have. Search around a little, some stuff has been covered before. Maybe JohnWalkersWorkshop (I think thats the username) will see this and be willing to chime in, depending on what you're going for. I think he knows about putting 911 engines into buses. _________________ Insert random important looking club initials here. |

I don't know precise years here, but in the mid '60s a friend of mine
buttoned his '57 Speedster race car engine into his late'50s single cab
in order to have transportation over the winter. Just a bolt-up as I recall.
Spring came, we "freshened" the Porsche engine, and went racing again.
(yes, Flipseat, it was at Road America ) |

Why not just buy a '72+ Bay bus they already have a 'Porsche' engine in them! Leave the splits alone please, they have been hacked enough! _________________ Rest In Peace HamburgerBrad, we will never forget you!

| dollar for dollar you can't beat a Type 4, if you want a "porsche" engine. Now, if you had a 911 engine laying around, I could understand wanting to use it. A good/rebuildable 911 engine can go for more than $7K easily, so its not really a good/cheap conversion unless you already have the engine laying around. I wouldn't even bother putting a 356 or anything less than 120HP into the thing just to have a 'porsche' engine...there's not much point. |

Yes, a typ 912 engine would be a nice upgrade. If you have the means, I highly recommend it.

That engine is worth more than any known bus out there.
Good luck rebuilding the 1500. What do you mean it needs a lot of work? What does it all need? A total rebuild on a stock engine isn't that bad. _________________ Insert random important looking club initials here. |

Jah. Kinda makes me wonder why they sold all six to one buyer, rather than sell each to the highest bidder. I especially liked that type 771. Looks like a direct descendant of the type 547 4 cam (Fuhrmann?)engine of 1954.
In all these years of being a Porsche motorhead, I've never seen so much stuff in such detail as the Pelican Parts Vasek Polak sale pictures.
Well, I did help a guy load a busted 1700 Spyder engine into his trunk. Like jewelry inside and out. Hirth roller crank.

The engine hasn't been used for several years. The studs are all bent and needs to be replaced. I think the case is leaking too....
It also needs some parts to finish it.
I can buy some studs, but i'm not sure how to repair the case (if there indeed is something wrong with it...)

Well, I don't agree with anything you say, I guess! A type 4 is not a Porsche, it is a type 4 volkswagen with type 039 heads (on the 2 liter and 912E)
May be a suitable engine for 90-120 hp, especially if you stroked it, would abe a nice bus engine. A 911 engine would be a waste of a 911 engine to take it out of the 911. And not very cheap. Perhaps more correctly, very expensive.
Most of our old busses came with 36 or 40 or 44 (?) hp engines. A good 1600 N makes 60 hp, and a Super makes 75 hp. And will for many miles.
If you really need more than 120hp (and why?), I say get a Subie. an EJ22 will make 145 hp and give good gas mileage, too. better than any air-cooled!

A suburu motor requires cutting and extensive plumbing. I use a 912e motor I stroked to a 2277, that damn thing (in a single cab) will carry 2000 lbs of landscaping material at 65 miles an hour down the freeway for and hour in the summer without even getting hot. I had to take a load of Tagro out to my island property for the garden and the truck just sailed along. I have easly 70,000 miles on it now with no loss of compression or ring blow by, I expect I should get close to that many more before I rebuild.
If you have the money up front spend it on a nice type 4 you will never be sorry. And if you are sorry don't worry no sheet metal needs to be hacked in the install so you can go back to your 40 ponies if that suits you later. |

If you're looking for more power why not buy a larger T1 motor? a 2007 or 2110 is ideal for bus. You can buy a complete kit or a ready built motor these days. Scat do good kits/ engines for example. _________________
