im a starving student and i want to lower my 72 sqaure on the cheap. i was lookig at my john muir hand book and came across the section "check and adjust your toe in" can i adjust it my self with out going to shop and paying $80????

If you are a starving student, you are better off leaving it stock, until you are graduated and have made your fortune.
Yes, you can set toe in with a tape measure, but I don't recomend it, unless you have done it before, or at least seen it done. John Muir had a lot of weird ideas.

Lowering and toe-in are not the same thing.

I made a toe gauge with sticks, small nuts/bolts, and it worked great for years. Muir's "straight sticks" or "concentric tubes" methods only work on the buses, though, with their higher ground clearance. Never worked on bugs and type 3s, which require measuring sticks with a "Z" shape to them.
