Got a project buggy I'm working on and it's got a really messed up shift pattern.
1st gear is nothing, second gear is reverse, 3rd is first, 4th is second, then I have to push down on the shifter(like you normally do when you need to shift into reverse) to shift over and up into 3rd and fourth is below that.

A mechanic that I don't have a lot of faith in said something about it could being something not welded correctly, I've got no idea.

Pull the shift lever out and have a look at the shift rod bushing. also look at the shift rod bushing carrier. I had one break a year back and it did just you have described. don't forget to check the condition of the shift rod coupler under the inspection plate behind the seats.

Good Luck.

Can you take out the shifter without disturbing the plate it's mounted over, and get a picture of how that plate is positioned? It could be upside down, backwards, even missing.

The coupler is brand new. And I think it was the shift rod bushing carrier that the mechanic said may be welded incorrectly. The pan has been shortened and has a small manx style body on it.

But I don't have much faith in this mechanic as he is the one that told me it runs and shift's fine when I called him up to pick up the buggy after he had been working on it. Then I found out the Steering box is garbage, shift's like crap, ran brake lines on the floorboards of the tub among other things.. So yeah.

For starters I would get new bushing in support under shifter and new lock out plate and shifter... If that does not help I would pull shift rod and install a adjustable adapter to get shift rod length and angle correct... Everything from coupler forward is suspect from way you describe problem and way shift rod may have been shortened...
