Vw Invasion Results
With a forecast predicting a 60% chance of rain, many racers and spectators were skeptical about the Vw Invasion and the success of the event. With a low turnout in drag cars the Super Pro and Pro class were combined just prior to eliminations. The rain held off for the Super Pro and Pro cars until the semi final round when the downfall of heavy rain cancelled the race. Making the final four were Mike Gagnier, Mel Shealy, Scott Sain and Dale Adams Jr. Although the car count was low there was still plenty of racing action to go around. Gary Zipperian made the long haul from Huntington, WV to display numerous wheels up runs here at Mooresville Dragway. Many other racers made the long drive to North Carolina; two of them were Nathan and Reggie Lee from Ruff and Tuff Racing. Nathan ran his career best ET of 6.305 in his Kawell powered turbo beetle. In the sportsman category it was Johnnie Walker taking the win over Rick Laws. Rick ran an 11.81 on his 11.81 dial in but was late on the tree with a .237 reaction time. Johnnie ran a 10.62 on his 10.55 dial in with a .114 reaction time.
In the Pro Stock class the 7 car field was narrowed to the final round until the rain came. The day started off with a classic Ollie Frey 60 foot wheel stand to get the crowd into the heads up pro tree action. After the first round of qualifying was complete it was Warren Skaggs in the #1 position with a 6.224/108mph. After the third and final round of qualifying the standings remained the same with Warren qualified #1 with a 6.208/109mph and Damon Harmon was #2 with a 6.252/110mph. Final qualifying results were as followed:
1. Warren Skaggs - 6.208 - 109mph
2. Damon Harmon - 6.252 – 110mph
3. Denis Elliott - 6.293 – 107mph
4. Todd Howard - 6.399 – 105mph
5. Ollie Frey - 6.549 – 108mph
6. Tay Woykowski - 6.605 – 101mph
7. Gene Collier - 6.665 – 101.79
In the first round of eliminations it was Warren Skaggs with the bye run. Todd Howard was paired up against Ollie Frey but Todd had the bye run when Ollie decided to not make a pass due to the worsening track conditions. Damon Harmon took the win over Gene Collier and Denis Elliott advanced over Todd Howard. In the semi final round Warren advanced over Todd Howard and Damon advanced over Denis Elliott. The finals were now set, it was to be a rematch of the Ohio race that took place just a few short weeks ago. During that race Damon got the best of Warren, but this time we won’t find out due to the down pour of rain.
The next race for the ECPRA Pro Stocks will be July 16th at Roxboro Dragway in Roxboro, NC. For more information please visit www.eastcoastpra.com or log onto www.roxboromotorsports.com
