Hi everyone. Our '69 bus has been sitting for about two years. Recently we got it back up and running and initially there did not seem to be any transmission issues (except occasionally popping out of fourth as it did two years ago). But after sitting at a light in neutral and without any apparent trauma, the shifter has apparently stopped communicating with the transmission At first, it would not leave neutral, but with some messing around we were able to get it into first and home. Now, it is stuck in first and the shifter will only move forward and backward with no play to the left or right. No different feel with clutch in or out or with car on or off. We are low on tranny fluid (none at bolt level) but the gear you can feel has fluid on it. Small pool of tranny fluid has formed under tranny.
Is this a linkage problem, or a tranny problem. Any ideas will be most appreciated.

Hi, Take a look at the shift coupler and the Front shift rod bushing support.
Good Luck
Shifter Parts ID
Sometimes the shift ball brakes.
Sometimes #60 brakes.

None of this looks like it is subject to visual inspection from under the car and that we'll need to pull the engine to get to the problem part. Correct? If so, then ok, and yes an overhaul of the tranny while we're at it.
Thanks much, |

Hi, you may have to remove a cover pan on the front. But both Shift Coupler and Front bushing can be seen and inspected from under the bus.
Good Luck |

A trany overhaul is not something you can do without many special tools and knowledge the book doesn't give you and even with that it takes doing them for a while to get it right not something for a novice but you can fix the shifter problem without special tools and help right here. _________________ where its cold and snowy |
