Is there a trick to getting my newly rebuild 36hp fuel pump to actually start pumping fuel? I need some advice on priming the system...

Raise the front of the car so fuel runs downhill. That will at least get fuel to flood the pump's diaphram chamber. After that it's a test of whether you (or whoever rebuilt the fuel pump) got the diaphram installed correctly so there's some "pumping" action when the rocker-arm pivots.

The diaphram needs to be installed with a "pre-load" on the rocker-arm as if the drive rod coming out of the engine block is fully extended (that's about 35mm on a 36hp) and the rubber diaphram is totally slack at that point.

Here's a tool I made to assist in assembling a 40hp fuel pump, the principle is the same with the 36hp, just a longer drive rod. Fuel Pump Rebuilding Jig
