SO-42 pop-top material shows up in several different colours:

Does anyone know the structure (if there is any) behind this?
Eg: is there a colour related to a production country / year / ...?

I would like to know what colour my 1967 Dutch SO-42 poptop stof would be correct.

Thanks!

Correct color is the upper left. The others are reproductions. No exact color match out there right now. I am looking for old Bay window canvas to make one from....

Here is a recent thread....

It does seem the upper left pic is all OG in excellent shape.
On one of my Westies I pulled canvas off of bays to make my poptop. Ive got to put another one together for my other Westy now. This time Im considerig mixing some material dyes to get a close match, I just haven't had the time to experiment. I forget which manufacturer I use but it is a common one you can get from a fabric/safeway store. The company also has a website with mixtures to make certain colors-Its a good base start anyway.

although everyone seems to feel that the photo of the upper left canvas is original, I for one DO NOT. I have an original canvas on my poptop SO42 and it does not have a seam at the corner (as shown in the picture) nor does the side window screens extend as LOW as the one shown. Maybe there were variations? but I doubt it.

Maybe I do not know the difference between my ass or a hole in the ground either

You are right about the screens being lower on the one in the picture, if it was replaced they did a good job matching the color.

Hi,

Could you please post a picture of your opened pop-top?

Good eye Mr. camperfan... The last time I saw an OG canvas was about 10 years ago so pardon us that do not have an OG one around to compare. You would be doing us a great service to post some detail pics of yours for reference.

I will post a picture as soon as I can. Unfortunately it is not going to be today as I keep my camper in storage and not at my residence.

My canvas had a long hole in the front panel (not sure if it was due to rot or from the fabric getting stuck on the outside of the rubber seal when the top was closed) so I chose to sew up two rectangular patches, each identical to the other, then loop stitch them to the top canvas (one patch inside, the other outside) rather than replace the whole canvas. It is only original ONCE!! :+)

Unfortunately I could not get any donor material for the patch so the color is off. The way I try to match/age the patches is by brooming on dirt with a hand broom every time I go camping Laughing

problem is that nobody is making a canvas that is the same colour as OG (would be happy to find out otherwise but as far as i can tell it is true)

Closest match I have sen is PLF's which uses sunbrella material (UV ressistant)- to get it any closer you would need to make it yourself

I agree.
I am getting the Sunbrella top. The material is a zillion times better than OG cotton canvas. I compared the Sunbrella material side by side with my tent stake bag and the color difference is negligible.

Woody, I sew Sunbrella for a living, It is the best canvas out their. Just be careful as to not have any rubbing going on when the top is in the down position. The abrasin factor of SUNBRELLA IS very low. Look in to Sunbrella Seamart as it is lined with vyinl.A lot stronger.

Today I received my reproduction canvas from Rolf de Kaam in the Netherlands.
The fabric is the exact same stuff that my side tent is made of. The sewing, velcro etc is excellent. He says they are sewn up by the same sewers who made the canvases for Westfalia originally. It looks that way.
I could not be happier.

I have read in previous posts about nails being used around the interior perimeter at the top to hold the canvas on.

My bus had had its canvas replaced in the past and they used a staple gun to attach that white plastic stripping. What kind of nail would be best used here? I would really rather use staples.

Just ran over this thread. I have two SO-42s, a 65 and a 66. The 65 had what was left of the original pop-top canvas when I restored it with an NOS canvas purchased from a VW dealer in 1980 by the PO and was still in the box when I purchased the Westy in 2002. The 66 still has the original canvas that is in rather poor shape. Both of these were and are installed with staples.

I would also like to see a picture of the one you received, particularly for color match to the original.
