I've got a 1971 bus and could use some help with the interior and engine identification. See photos. The bus has a Westy Campmobile interior, but this is not specifically referenced in the M Plate. It decodes as a 71 Neptune blue Kombi with a middle three-person bench seat and rear three-person bench seat with "interior trim in passenger compartment." However, there is no middle bench seat. There is a rear Z bed, and a rear facing seat behind the driver seat, which has a cooler underneath the cushion! Is there a way to know if the Westy interior is correct and original to the bus? Also, wouldn't this have had a sink, table, stove etc?

I'm also interested to know if the engine is potentially original to the bus ( i.e. correct type and manufactured at approximately the same time as the chassis). However, there does not appear to be a serial number on the engine block underneath the generator. There is a number on the exhaust intake manifold: 211 129 701K. Does this tell me anything? Is there another way to identify the engine? Does the missing serial number indicate the block has been replaced at some point ?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Robert

I have a 71 Westy and the m code for the hard top Westy is P30. My bed says campmobile 70. Maybe another camper maker or just a custom made camper. The engine number should be on the engine case just below where you can read zundfolge. I don't see it but it might be under some dirt and grease. Could be a replacement that was never stamped. ???

it is a custom camper. Started life as a station wagon and was converted probably in California. The engine block is not original.

Keep in mind that the car is 44 years old. The average mileage for a car is 12,000 miles a year. 12,000 x 44 = 528,000 miles. While it may be less - lots of things won't be original mechanically because of the age.

Your job now as you own it is to slowly upgrade it back to where it performs like it did 44 years ago.

Laughing Thanks, I cannot find a number on the block where it should be so will assume this is a replacement. I agree, a lot has probably changed over 44 years. I'm looking forward to tinkering with it.
