I recently got 1970 Campervan and it has a new motor. I've tried some general searches, but can't seem to get a handle on where it came from. What I'm looking for is a general info like spark plug gaps, info on the timing, etc. Forgive my ingorance, I haven't worked on engines before and am new to VWs. Engine number is AH 185 480. Any suggestions for resources?

Thanks,
Ben

You might want to start with John Muirs "How to Keep Your Volkswagon Alive; A Manual of Step By Step Proceedures for the Complete Idiot".

I have it, and a few others. That one has been very helpful. It gives some good general information.

Bentley also has one that is very good. Much more technical.

AH would be 73-74 bug engine case. Spark plug cap is usually the same across the board. Timing will depend on what distributor you are running.
