Good car- reliable drivetrain, good handling, easy to repair and modify, even for a novice, good parts availability. As far as problems, all of the basic used- car rules apply. There are a number of good GTI websites which will provide you with all sorts of info- try http://pocketrocket.ca for a start, and follow the links.
