|
|
Hi, Can you confirm me if ALL barndoor's engine number comes with the dash (-) between the 20 and the rest of the number?
Can a 1952 engine comes without the dash?
Thanks _________________ 52 Ambulance

It looks like there is a dash before the "20", after the "20" and at the end of the number on all examples.
Notice the "2982" below the number on my '54. I think this was stamped in by the guys that rebuilt it in February of 1982. Anybody seen this before? |

jeff
cos of your website pic, i had a closer look at my block the other day
it does have another four digit number
it is lower down than yours
& i think it reads top to btm, not left to right
it wasnt a 29 number
i think it started 24**, something like 2457
& what's the '17' for??
mark's 51 has a small 4-digit number too - 2527?
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=289790
and a 27....
(actually, my number may have been 2527...)
your numbers look too neat!

the "-20-" prefix was used up until the end of 1955 calendar year. post barndoor wolfsburg busses up to the end of 12/55 also have 20- numbered cases. the first pic in this thread is a pic i took of an 11/55 engine i have.
i saw a service bulletin that says the 1- (type 1) and 20- prefixes were to be dropped after 12/31/55.
i see those "small" numbers on alot of different parts, not just cases. maybe they are casting lot numbers? i have always wondered what they meant, and have never found a definitive answer. |

I think the small 4-digit numbers are inspector stamps. _________________ Thanks,

The little 4 digit number is interesting and must be a factory thing rather than a rebuild stamp like I had thought it might be. |
