Is an aftermarket oil cooler a good idea for a Baja? Im planning on driving my Baja almost every day with some off-road use. Im thinking that turning the bigger tires is going to put a lot of stress on the motor and cause more heat. So Should I get a Remote oil cooler for the 1300 that I have on the car now? Also What is a good book for building/modifying a Baja bug?
Thanks
Andy Rattley

Good questions..If your gonna do any hard off roading yea a cooler is good and if its a daily driver yes also, Mine is a daily driver and ive had a external cooler and a remote oil filter with the stock one for 4 years and it really helps in the summer, If you do get one dont go to big cuz it could overcool thats what happend to me and dont use the cheap finned ones. Are you in hot climate area? The best book is Baja Bugs and Buggies by jeff hibbard published by HP press. It has a wealth of info for everything from a recreational baja to full out raceing info. Also check out this forum, We have alot of helpful people.

I just got that book today. Really Good Ideas and Info. I actually live in Portland Oregon. I was thinking about the oil cooler. Summer it gets hot but Winter is cold. Could I run an oil cooler in the summer months and put in like a check valve that I can open and close depending on the weather? Or would that just be a bad Idea? Also What did you use for the remote oil filter? I Live in a very dusty area and There is alot of contruction around here.
Thanks
Andy

Yea you could do that. There is a thermostat that is made just for that, it opens up at a certain temp. and allows oil to flow through the cooler. Check out an issue of hot VWs and look at the big ads they usually have them advertised. I bought a kit with the cooler, hose and the filter mount adapter but you can buy all the peices separately. I use a fram oil filter hooked up to an aftermarket filter mount that any VW off road store would have. again checkout the ads and you will see everything you need advertised.
