Hi everyone. I have a single port 1600 in my 1970 autostick Ghia. Can anyone tell me how to get more power without compromising the autostick? I was thinking about a dual port conversion, but I know next to nothing about it. Can anyone break it down for me?
If I keep it single port, what can I do to increase hp and performance while keeping the autostick happy? I was thinking dual carbs (what kind?), exhaust (what will fit), better ignition, heads (I haven't a clue), and/or anything else that can be "bolted" on for a performance gain. Brand names and availability would be appreciated as well. Thanks guys,
mmvwak. |

You can fit a 71+ doghouse cooled 1600dp, so long as it has the small diameter vacuum port in the inlet manifold under the carb (not to be mistaken for the large diameter port used for power brakes on the 1600dp bus engine). You gain about 2 hp doing this - it's not a very big difference - the main thing being the bigger 34PICT/3 carb, which breath a little better than the 30PICT/3 yours came with.
Maybe increase the 1600dp engine to 1776 but keep the stock inlet manifold and 34PICT/3 carby - that will give you a useful boost and still keep the vacuum signal you need.
I don't think dual carbs would work very well - you'd need a good vacuum suganl from under one set of carbs to work the clutch.
Higher compression heads and a mild cam might help with the current engine (might need higher octane fuel too), though it will always be limited by the 30PICT/3 carby - it's a good carby but runs out of breath sooner than the 34 used on the dp manifold engines.
"better ignition" won't give you more power, but might give better starting and less maintenance, depending on what you fit (Pertronix, CDI or both).
Extractor (header) exhaust systems can help a little, but unless you change the heat exchangers for J tubes of bigger heat exchangers (www.berg.com ?) it won't make a lot of difference.
Email [email protected] and read his site www.aircooled.net . He may have some useful suggestions, and he carries only quality parts - no rubbish. |
