Is it possible to take a 4 speed manual transmission and put it in a 74 Ghia Vert that is currently autostick? Is this a big job?

I have seen it done before. I can't tell you exactly how the procedure goes. But a VW shop where I buy stuff just converted a 71 autostick to a four speed. This car was in the midst of a pan-off at the time. I would guess you will need manual ghia to donate parts.

heres the link, scroll down.

I"VE DONE IT!!!!!!, AND SO CAN YOU......THE TRICKY PART IS RUNNING THE CLUTCH CABLE TUBE.
YOU NEED A MANUAL PEDAL ASSEMBLY, 4 SPEED TRANS AND MOUNTS, CLUTCH AND PRESSURE PLATE, CLUTCH CABLE, IF YOU CAN WELD THE NEW TUBE IN THATS A BONUS, CUT OPEN THE TUNNEL AND YOU CAN SEE IN WHERE THE TUBE SHOULD GO.
GO FOR IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've done it too. Ianvilleza pretty much outlines it. But a 74 WILL have the clutch tube already. I'll post the link to complete instructions as soon as I find it again.
But are you asking about converting the autostick to manual, or using the manual trans with an autostick engine. If it's the latter, it can't be done, easily anyway. The A/S trans is quite a bit different from the manual.

Which reminds me, I saw an ad for a KG with "the rare autostick option". HA! Rare?

I have a 68 semi-auto beetle which has been converted to manual, and as the others have said, the clutch tube is the tricky bit, but many of the later auto-sticks HAVE the clutch tube (unused) so you might be lucky.

Here's a site with the full details.

Here's another site which has the tunnel cut open so you can see how the clutch tube fits (if needed).
