| I pull up to my usual gas station. Nice guy works there. Russian or Ukrainian. Bit of a language barrier, but we manage. He looks at the car while it's filling up. Points to the front of the car. "Four seelinder?", he asks. "Yes", I say, and point to the back. He looks at me for a couple of seconds, then gets this look on his face as if to say, "Oh, yeah, I knew that!" |

| i used to work in a historic bakery, Old Salem's Winkler bakery for those in NC. one afternoon i was walking to my car, a 72 superbeetle at the time when a couple pass me on the sidewalk. they were speaking Afrikaans, and were from South Africa. as i am opening the door the man calls to me and says "nice bug man." he then procedes to come back and we talk about it for a while. he seemed to be in his 30's and told me about how they ahd moved to W-S a few years ago and in South africa, almost everyone has a beetle. he said he used to work on them with his friends back in the day, and how much he would love to find and buy a nice one the in the states. we converse for a few more minutes and i hop in to fire her up and clunk.... dead battery. the radio had been on all day while i was baking cookies. i yell back at him and ask if he'd give me a push so i could pop-start it. so his wife hops behind the wheel and he and i start pushing. the old gal sputtered back to life and i was on my way. that is the great thing about VW people, they are almost always NICE! |
