I'm very close to sending my bus off for paint, after a small hitch in the summer...

Can anyone tell me, where on a barndoor panel van would the paint stop and 'primer' colour start, what lipping... I know its anal but I want to get it right.. Got any pics of OG..

Also would the chassis, engine bay, inside the front wheel arches, inside the cargo doors and engine lid have been body or primer coloured. I take it fuel tanks and spare wheel trays were black?

I've seen many buses that are different.. but want to know what would have been factory.

Also would the cab area have had a roof lining, or cardboard, same material as the door cards?

Any ideas

Cheers

Deano

Good work Deano. Things are going fast for the '54. Here's a pic of the engine bay in my '54 216. The whole chassis, cargo interior, and the inside the deck lid are gray. Most of the gas tanks are a "different" color gray ... one with more blue in it. It can get confusing. If I can get organized, I'll get some "lipping" pics of the panel, for you. For the primer gray, I use a proper urethane single stage with flattening agent. Works well. NO roof lining ... The entire cab area, including the cab divider, are painted the body color.

dash and cab area were painted dove blue, including the inside of the roof.
Gray kick and door panels, never had roof panels
cargo area (inside kombi behind bulkhead) gray
Inside of engine compartment was dove blue.
tire tray black

Hey Rick, your engine compartment looks sharp. I like to see it "primered" like original. Too often you see the ENTIRE engine compartment painted the body color when it originally wasn't, even on deluxes.

A couple questions on your engine. Shouldn't the generator nut be painted and shouldn't the coil strap have a slotted hole in it?

i personally think this is a hit or miss thing. sometimes the compartment was painted the color, sometimes left alone. im pretty sure when i was doing my deluxe, underneath the plush carpet and pimp sea blue paint,i found red throughout ,which is why i painted mine red.same with kombis. i was pretty confident kris' kombi should have been blue inside. i just checked my standard and it is original light beige. and going through the gallery i see krushers is blue as well as johnnys when greg owned it.

I think you are right about the variability of the paint in the engine compartment. My '54 deluxe engine compartment was originally painted red over about 80% of the compartment. You could see a large patch of gray primer above the engine. It looked like the painter didn't crouch down and spray up at that area. This "holiday" is what we tried to duplicate on the restoration. A lot of "human factor" on the early paint jobs.

Dedication to the cause... The transmission is out right now too. Anyone need some good frame photos?

There are various detail shots here:

Ev, in some of the photos it looks like the gussets near the apron are painted blue. Are they? Is there overspray around them or does it look like they were masked off?

yes, i agree with mark
most of the rest of the deluxe 'overspray' seems to follow pretty standard patterns (ie cab area, bulkhead, b-posts, door inners), but it seems the engine bay either got painted or it didnt

heres some examples, all og paint (at least in the engine bay) i believe. compare 'em

It's hard to tell because of surface rust but it looks like overspray. Weird that the right side is full painted and the left side is all primer. Maybe because of the truck-only gas line?

Jeff, I thought your engine compartment was primered originally?

June '53 standard,
engine compartment panted lower body color.
I can't find a pic, but the 54 kombi (VIN 105 3xx) I used to have, the engine compartment was painted with tarry undcoating. Cleaned that off to find nice bright strong dove blue protected from the elements for decades.

IF I rub to clean the 53's engine compartment, the paint will rub off.
I thought maybe the standard paint is weaker, or mauybe what it was exposed to over the years (sat in an acid rain area which killed apple trees) or ?
