I saw it happen. He started out in the right lane and swerved over to the left lane and into the wall. It looked like he had it under control but went back over to the wall in the right lane and within about 5 seconds of hitting the wall a second time, the car went up in a big fireball from the front. He got out pretty fast after that (had the crowd worried at first). Was a shame...left the show after that but got to see a few more passes down by the finish line while walking to the parking lot.

Real shame, for that car was the best built on a Fiat I've seen.
Kudos also for the safety built into the roll cage as that's why he managed to walk away! _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

Looks like he was out of shape from the start...like to know what brand of fuel cell that was...burst like a water baloon.
That car was the shit though...should be fixable? |

I've got some excellent footage of it. It was by far the scariest thing I've ever experienced in my 18+ years of attending VW events.
Check it out by clicking on the photo below:
You'll see the event coverage of the trip to Fontana, and if you register on the site, you can view the tribute article to the Fast Fiat, and the video of the accident. It was horrendous! He's very lucky to have walked away!

Wow, now that you see the damage, it is sad to say that this car will probably not return to the strip. Its nice to see that he was not hurt, especially with the fireball that engulfed him, that could have turned really bad in the blink of an eye. _________________ This is my 23rd year in the Auto Body/Paint Game!

Here's a question.....
Right from the start, the car was into the center lane and the run looked botched. At that point, why wouldn't the driver just realize that the run was messed up, and let off the gas? Instead, it looks like he tried to save the run and kept full throttle.
Maybe hindsight is always 20/20, but it seems that the crash could have been avoided if he would have bagged the run right after getting so far off track in the first 30 feet.
Sorry if I'm missing something big like the throttle was stuck. Honest question, not trying to piss anyone off. |
