|
|
As I am trying to restore Gretchen, I am of course replacing wiring grommets. I have two questions.
1. I am using the same grommet size for most of my larger replacements. Some of the original grommets have a larger aperture than the ones I am using. I have been of the mode of push the wiring through no matter the size. My attitude is the tighter the fit the better. Although some seem a bit loose, so have added a bit of sealant for those. Is that an issue I should be concerned and consider finding a better size.
2. Is there a better/best source? I have about used up the ones I originally purchased and need more. I should not be, but am amazed at how many I have used thus far.
Thanks in advance _________________ Ossipon

Wiring grommets have two "main" uses.
1. Weather sealing,/leak prevention
2. Wire or hose anti-chafe or anti-abrasion.
In many/most cases......it's both.
I would not use sealant. It kind of defeats the use of a grommet.
Grommets are reusable ....meaning that if I have to remove a hose or wire for maintenance....it slips right back in and the grommet still works without having to cut or grind or clean.
Otherwise if you now have to remove sealant.....you could have done without the grommet and just used RTV.
Try McMaster Carr. They have lots of grommets. Each part # has a cad drawing as well. Also try the electronics supply houses like digi-key. Ray |

Understood and agreed, I guess I did not make myself clear. I planned to use the sealant in addition to the grommet when the grommet opening was larger than the wiring. The sealant was to be space filler for the grommet void left by the wiring. It is something I started doing when I did my 71 Super Beetle and continued when working on my BMWs.
I like bullet/cone shaped grommets as they do a better job (and install easier) in my opinion than the donut style. I had forgotten about searching McMaster. I found the ones I needed there. Thank you

The most common ones are available from Wolfsburg West - I found the rest of them at a local VW dealership because they superseded them with a slightly different design while retaining the original ID and OD of the grommet. |
