Hello everyone, my name is Randy and I just purchased a 72 super beetle and also new to the site. I have lots of questions and will be visiting many, many topics on here. I was told this beetle has a newly rebuilt motor but I'm questioning it. I bought it from my boss who bought it from a guy who immideatly sold it upon catching his spouse cheating even though he was right in the middle of restoring this beautiful car . He did nothing else to the beetle besides bag and box and sale. So it sat for 5 years in a sheet metal shop waiting on someone to finish the job. It has brand new lots of things to say the least. The motor was wrapped in plastic but the pushrod tube are rusted. I will be uploading lots more pics, some that include down inside the motor from distributor, oil fill opening, and need as much info as possible. Thanks for looking and any all is greatly appreciated. |

Sure looks nice. Looks like the motor could have been gone through but not wrapped and protected enough to let sit for 5 years. Looks like humidity has gotten to it. That is not necessarily a bad thing though. Just make sure all the, what appears to be surface rust, gets cleaned and lubed. That is a 71 engine lid. 72 had 4 sets of vents. But that shouldn't be an issue.
Definitely a nice project. Enjoy and welcome. |

Looks like a good project to finish.
Good luck,

Thank you and I agree, it's probably just surface rust and I will defiantly remove and install new pushrod tubes. It came with lots of extra parts, one being a whole new set of the spring loaded pushrod tubes. But I have read somewhere that should only be temporary on the spring loaded tubes so not sure yet. And I did not notice that on the deck lid, thanks for info. The engine was wrapped and duck taped several times while it sat for 5 years so I'm probably good. |

So a 72 lid would help to keep the engine cooler I'm guessing with more vents. How come see a beetle now and then that looks like the lid is up higher than normal where hinges are? Is that a cooling method used by some guys? |

Your seeing "hood stand offs" and are liked/disliked/extremely disliked/and finally used as a last resort. Post a few pictures of the interior steering wheel etc, can tell if its a 72 with the wrong deck lid or it may be a 71, no big deal either way..... _________________ 1972 1302

Push-rod tubes will show rust--unless they're stainless. Mine have a little surface rust, but it's no big thing.
Some metal-only spring-loaded push rod tubes are okay--if they are the kind with the interior "O-rings". The plastic ones are garbage, and the extendable "screw-type" adjustables are prone to leakage--or so I've heard.
