I'm rebuilding a '69 bug and I am thinking of painting the engine tin and heaterboxes with "hammered metal" appearance. I saw this in a rattle-can at Wal-Mart (don't remember the brand). I like the appearance of this paint but I'm not sure how well the rattle-can stuff will hold up on engine components due to the heat. Any thoughts appreciated. If I need high-temp paint does anyone know of any available in "hammered metal". I would also like to paint my muffler, if possible. Thanks. |

I painted my engine tin w/ CHEAP (like .89/can) rattle-can paint and it's holding up about 1000 miles later.
The heater boxes however will require very hi-temp paint. |

I painted my tin gloss black with a $1 shaker can. It looks really good. I think the only reason shaker can paint comes out crappy is because it takes so long to dry, and gets dust on it. If you clean the surface really well, and paint it in a small area, not out hanging from a tree, it will look good.
I put shaker can "extreme heat bbq paint" tremclad on my J tubes and muffler. I sanded off the plasticy crap paint that comes on new mufflers etc, and put 4 coats of heat paint on. I installed it, started it up, and the new paint was melted off about 5 mins later. It said 650 deg celsius. I guess not. |

I repainted my muffler and heater boxes with Hi-Temp paint and ya know what it is still intack imagine that. Spend the $$$ and go to a wood stove shop and purchase there... or automotive store and get the good hi temp paint. My sheet metal looks great also, painted it flat black, heater boxes grey. |
