I have a daily driver deluxe that I probably will never strip completely down as I drive it every day. But I want to take precautions to preserve it. I have been crawling under it on weekends and wire brushing and sanding down the belly pans and doing a couple of repair welds. I was going to hand brush POR 15 gloss black on the pans when I am done. Will someone down the line have a nightmare media blasting the POR 15 off if they do a major restoration? If so, what should I do to protect the underside of my bus?
Thanks in advance |

I would say no, just keep doing it. You are preserving the bus in the best way that you can. If you don't do this and the bus rots out, there will be nothing to restore. Not all VWs need to be show winners. Take care of your driver so it lasts.
I have have limited knowledge about media blasting, but I would think that POR 15 would eventually come off. |

Did you buy your POR 15 locally? I noticed your zip code email address. Can you walk in somewhere and buy POR 15 in Southern California or do you have to order it over the internet?

i'm partial to black XO-RUST, from true value. if you want to blast it off later, no problem. like that rhino liner people apply to their pickup beds, how in the hell do you get it off later? |

POR-15 is a real biatch to sand blast...i've tried it and it takes many times longer to remove than normal paint (if you can manage to get it off at all)..you can't use a chemical stripper because the stuff is immune the everyting under the sun!! Once the stuff cures...it's pretty much going to be there forever. |

I POR-15 my belly pans a few years ago and it not only kept the rust away, it is hard enough to stop small hard objects from cutting through it's surface. If it is a beast to remove someday for me or someone else, at least I or they will have something under the coating to work with...

Sounds like you did all the prep work necessary to stabilize your pans, so I say go for the POR-15. If someone later wants to do a better job on the pans, they would probably have to replace the pans, so the POR-15 won't be an issue. By the way Radar74SB said that "the stuff is immune to everything under the sun". This is ironic because the one thing the POR-15 is NOT immune to is SUNLIGHT! Yup, it is damaged by UV light. This is no problem for floor pans, though. |

the sun doesn't actually cuase any physical deterioration to the stuff, the UV just makes it turn a bit ligher (looks like a slight haze on the gloss black)...my pans have lighened up a bit but i still can't scratch the stuff with a key!! You cna buy a special topcoat for it if the color change is a problem for you..i didn't feel that it would matter on my pans as they will not really be seen anyway.
they say you can paint right over the rust with por-15 but i sandblasted my pans to bare metal just 'cause i hate rust and would not sleep nights knowing that there was rust under the coating..hehe |
