I was hoping someone could do me a favor and measure the size (length-width) of their dashpad vehicle identification number tag?
Mine got lost and I'm making a replacement.
Also, are they rectangullar with sharp corners or rounded?
Does the VIN include anything other than the number?

Thanks.

My '74 came with a different pan, stripped interior (so no dash plate) but did come with a tag with a number series riveted to the inside of the trunk, near the latch. What is that number?

They're attached with a small sheetmetal screw at each end.

Actually, I believe VW used blind rivets.

Ok, I've got my new repro VIN tag. Could someone please post a picture of their installed dashpad? I need to see exactly where the VIN is positioned and oriented on the dash.

Thanks in advance.

That's what I'm talking about! Thx.
I had a local trophy shop engrave a metal tag with correct VIN # and vw logo. I'll post a picture after I install it.

Nice Dash BTW. Is that original?

The dash is not original but it's not fiberglass .
It's from KGPR .
ya ,send picture of your VIN # and tell us how much you pay for it .
The exinguisher is from Costco (you get 2 for $18.00) and they fit perferctly between the seat frame and the chanel.I do not know with what it is filled but it's marine type for A-B-C fire .

Looks real good!

I'm surprised they even agreed to put
that VW logo on there. Most places around
here won't do it, because of the trademark issue
that VW is so fond of closely protecting.

I'm impressed with your repro dash VIN.

Has anyone ever done the same with the trunk VIN tag? My '66 had a nosejob graft and came to me without its original Aluminum tag in the front.

I'm sure if you took a picture of one to a trophy shop; they might be willing to do it? That's all I did. Another idea is to go to petstore that has one of those dog tag engraving machines. If they've got a rectangle/square one, you could easily have it engrave everything...except the logo.

Or try these guys. Not sure how expensive they would be, but they look awesome.

Thanks Todd, I'll try a few of those ideas.

I have another tag from a junked '69, but it has the wrong # of course. I wonder if I could use that as a basis and get the new # installed. I went to a trophy shop a few years ago that was largely run by hippy types...I think I'll try there first.

I know you guys are trying to make your vehicles look restored/original. But what you are doing with VIN tags is illegal.
The Fed Govt required that VIN tags be added to dashboards to allow law enforcement and car dealers easier access to the VIN without having to open hoods, doors, crawl under cars or remove seats. the problem with the VIN tag on the dash was that car theives caught on fast that this would be the only place that police would look. So the theives went to junk yards to get a similar tag for the stolen vehicle. Some looked really bad, crumpled. bent, scratched, attached with scres and glue.
All 50 states immediately amended their vehicle and traffic laws to include a new section called 'altered VIN' making it a criminal offense to alter, produce, possess. move, cover, replace or change in any way the appearance or attachment of the original tag.
But a problem developed with the dash location because the dash might need replacing at some time. That's why the additional tag is now attached to the left window post or the left bottom of the windshield frame. Also making it more difficult to alter.
the bottom line is that if you are ever stopped for a traffic infraction and the officer sees your home made/store bought VIN tag, be prepared to spend a few hours of 'further investigation ' at police headqueaters.
To save yourself some grief, I suggest that if you replace your dash, leave the VIN tag off. If you are questioned about where is the tag, tellthem you replaced the dash and remove the rear seat to show the VIN [and of course the that # must match the # on your vehicle registration/title]

So if someone replaces the VIN tag on the car to match the other tag on the body, or the pan, it's illegal?

Honestly, I don't think the state would give a rat's ass, especially when the car in question is being restored. I would be hard-pressed to believe that if someone restores the tag on the dashpad of his VW, that some DMV type is going to know that it isn't original.

Many states out east don't even issue a title to a vehicle over 20 years old, and in some cases the odometer reading is listed as "UNKNOWN" when it has hit 100,000 miles.

Also, isn't removing the VIN tag an alteration? As you pointed out, wouldn't that be illegal?
