My floor jack has seen better days so am debating to get another one.
Sears has this one for sale this week and was wondering what you guys think.
I don't need anything super heavy duty like for heavy trucks but do need to get under cars that are pretty close to the ground - this thing is pretty low. |

I have seen some pretty thin floor jacks ...not craftsman
I trust craftsman products more than the crap from other places(except the spendy guys)
If its rated for 1.5 tons then it will get the job done |

You can NEVER have "enough" tools!
I have one just like it as my second floor jack and traveler as it only weights around 40 pounds. Normally called a "pitman's jack" as in working it like nascar, it pumps up really quick but also drops like a rock when released! So you have to be careful.
Will do just about any job needed on a bus but I'd suggest you still buy a "normal" 2 to 2.5 ton floor jack later. _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

The one I have is identical to the craftsman you are looking at. Leads to belive that it is the same generic china one but with craftsman plastered all over it!
Again, it will do the job though. Had mine for quite a while without complaints and this one seems to be priced pretty good too. Good luck! _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

Before you buy it, look at the customer reviews on that page (tab next to the specs). All 12 reviews rated it 1 out of 5 mostly because of the jack leaking. I don't own one of them, I have a "generic" brand floor jack, I was just browsing around the link you provided and read the reviews. FWIW,

When it comes to chinese stuff I over buy on the weight ratings. I bought a china 4 ton floor jack and some 12 ton jack stands. I have had no problems with them - I figure if its rated for 4 tones a few hundred pounds of VW should be ok.
You should look at the jack listed below it sometime (Motorcylcle ATV) they are good for engine removal... |

Wow! I didn't see that! Not a single "fair" review, all are bad. I guess I got the early "lemon" that was actually good!
Just checked on mine and it was made in Taiwan, not quite china.
Mine came from either Kragen or Pep Boys and I paid about $150 a couple of years ago. Again, no complaints and it is fairly light. Good luck in finding a suitable replacement still! _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

I've got that Motorcycle/ATV jack pictured in the ad.
That's one handy MF'r for engine and/or trans removal. _________________ "Curiosity killed the cat, but for a while I was a prime suspect." |

Alright, that's the second "for removal" in short order.
I too have one and will third the "removal" use but add that it isn't always as good to install. It just doesn't have the give needed to "wiggle" the engine back in unless everything is lined up just right.
Have tried a few times and more often than not, had to swap jacks for the install! _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

I was looking at one while at the store today. That works then, huh? Interesting...

I have that exact jack. I've owned it for a year and a half. No leaks yet. I'm happy with it. _________________ www.DenverWildlifeControl.com |

Thanks! I have a craftman tool store across the street so I'm sure it will tempt me to get one now.
It does have "Craftsman" on it so I wonder if it has that unlimited guarantee as well..
I've asked before in the store about warranty and they said it was on mechanics tools only. |

Again, for removal. Also it isn't as manuverable as a normal floor jack. Remember, it's intended for an ATV and normally all you'd do is just jack up the ATV, work on it, then jack down and off it. Not really a "carry all" type thing. Pulling the engine out, you'd drop the engine on it and well, pull. However, bringing the engine back in is a more precise operation and the ATV jack can get a little ackward at it.
It is great when working on the engine though. Say, dropping the engine to replace the doghouse, generator, or some such type work! _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

Gotcha. I could see that be useful -- good tip. |

Unlimited waranty is on hand tools only....the others usually have a waranty for a year or two. _________________ A good friend will come and bail you out of jail...but, a true friend will be sitting next to you saying, "Wow...that was fun!"

| I have wondered about using a transmission jack for engine removal/installation. The ones I have seen have a flat surface for the engine to rest on, but they also look like they will also swivel or pivot around to help with installation. Anyone ever used one for that? |

I have a motorcycle lift that does the same things, but it goes higher, its bigger, and I can use it as a roll around work table when it isn't in use as a jack or hoist.

That's about 10 lbs to much for a "true" racing jack. Most of the teams use a BRUNNHOELZL jack. They aren't made to be used as a day to day jack. They're used in pit stops only. They have a one pump lift where the craftsman will take alot more. The race teams use regular heavy steel jacks for non pit stop lifting. But the craftsman jack is about $1100 less than a BRUNNHOELZL. |
