my car is smoking like crazy. i put a quart in yesterday filling it about halfway between the marks and now it is below the low line again. is a piston ring blown? any ideas?

Sounds like it might be rings.I'd do a compression test or even a leak down test just for kicks to see where you're at.

baja5, not to be rude but do you know anything about the internal combustion engine? There is no "kicking" involved.

Just a little.If you have something important to say just spit it out.Lets see.The car is smoking,using oil. and VW's dont use valve seals.Let's hear your opinion on the subject.Yes,I know that a compression test and a leakdown test won't tell you the condition of the oil control rings,However they will give you a general idea of engine condition.If you have a better suggestion i'd be all ears.

My vote would say there is a dead piston!!.......Are all of your cylinders firing? You might pull your plugs.. (look for the one covered in oil....)

...and while you're pulling them, pull one wire at a time and see if there's one that doesn't make any difference. If there is, there's your problem-

-throw that wire away, and you're good!

^ yeah i pretty much figured that out for myself. all the cylenders are firing though but ill give pulling the wires off a shot
