What year?

73 has the gas heater in the trunk, controls on dash.
74 has heater boxes like bugs do. Controls on each side of emergency brake.

If your heater is hooked up and functioning correctly, here's how you use it:

The pull knob near the door, below the windshield latch is the thermostat. The more you pull it out, the more heat. To the right of the headlight switch should be a twist knob. One click clock-wise will turn on the heater. You should hear the fan start running and fuel pump clicking. Then with in few seconds you should hear the gas ignite and hot air should start blowing under the dash.

If knob that you twist is also a timer. If you wanted to heat up the Thing while you finish your coffee or brush your teeth, simply twist the knob more and the heater will run for approximately 20 minutes by itself, with the engine off.
