|
|
I have owned my Bus for over 23 years now. I have noticed my registration fees climbing upwards every year.
I am curious to know about other states and how much they charge.
I'll start:
California
'66 Bus
2013 Sticker - $82
No SMOG requirement
I am also interested in other countries; please let us know how much it costs and what other fees you are obligated to pay annually, for such an old vehicle. _________________ "OG = Original German" -- TheSamba.com dictionary |

Historic (Model Year) plates, one time fee. Use to be $16, but I think it's up to $21 now. _________________ Aaron D. Badertscher

Here in Washington state I paid 43.75 this year. Thats regular
registration for my '63 15 window. Island county (Whidbey Island)
70 miles north of Seattle.
I'm not sure but I believe its a bit less for antique (historic) plates
then its a reduced rate, or perhaps free after that each year.
Some restrictions apply however like no daily driving. But most folks I know that do have them ( antique plates) say they've never been stopped by any official checking / asking about that.

Fees in Ca. are based on, among other things, the price paid for the vehicle--it's called the "Use Tax." It's quite likely when you registered your 63 EZ, the price you indicated you paid was more than the other two posters and so your registration was higher. Also, registration fees went up a few years ago so when you first registered your bus may also be a factor. |

IN WASHINGTON: I used to run YOM plates on a VW bus- Got a ticket for an "expired" plate- had to explain that to the traffic police to get it excused. Then I got pulled over by the police driving it to my garage at school - went to court and still had to pay a big fine After that, I gave up on running vintage plates on any of my old cars...not worth the hassle _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia |

In Washington State YOM Plates are only used to attend events such as Parades vw shows etc not to be used as daily driver---it is selectively enforced so you are not so if pulled over you tell the Officer that you are on your way to a VW Repair shop if it's not a Show day-- works most of the time
Tags for my bus are $ 78.00---it's a 67---live in Seattle which has a bunch of tag on fees |

Are you people really complaining about the cost of registration?
In B.C. we register our vehicles (I think it costs about $40yr), but we also have to insure our vehicles through the government operated insurance company. ICBC. So the basic insurance cost, no collission just liability, is about $900yr for my 84 GTI, and that is with my 40% safe driver's discount. If you're a new driver in BC your insurance would be over $1800yr for a car that is worth $500. Oh and of course the $40 registration fee.

Im considering doing just that. But, Ive heard different stories about what you are limited to as far as usage of the historic vehicle. Some say go for it, some say not going to because you sign a waiver stating you will only drive it to shows. Regular registration is about 45. _________________ Waiting for santa to drop off funky green. I can wish can't I???? |

There are limits, but violating the limits is not a criminal violation. The only recourse for not abiding by the ORC code is plate revocation and only Columbus (State) can do that.
That doesn't mean you won't get a citation by some cop who has no clue. You'll just have to defend yourself, which will most likely mean getting a lawyer.
It's a toss up. To me the benefits are worth the risk. To others it's just not worth it. _________________ Aaron D. Badertscher
